Watchmen

So today I saw the movie. I was quite pleased with the movie overall. I read a few reviews/critiques/rants of the movie but kept an open mind. It's been a few years since I sat and the read the novel.

I thought it was interesting how the prose sections where made into the opening credits although I think that there maybe should have been a little bit more backstory. They didn't really touch upon Hooded Justice and Captain Metropolis's alleged relationship. In fact, other than Silhouette's death, that was the only mention of gay characters. Unfortunately, I think they went with the titillation factor on this one. I also remember Rorschach once made the comment he though Adrian Veidt was a homosexual. I know Alan Moore did not intend anything homophobic when he wrote it but I see this being purposefully written out. I think the mention of homosexuality served the larger theme of why these costumed vigilantes were a threat and forced out of their capes. Before I leave the titillation thought aside, I think Laurie and Dan's sex scene was a little more gratuitous than I remember.

The forced retirement of heroes was one of the major themes that was glossed over. Another theme missed was Manhattan's distancing himself from humans. The comic showed Manhattan's decreasing need for clothes and this was not addressed at all in the movie.

One final thing was the few missed parts of Rorschach's backstory involving his mother and working in the garment industry. While this is not a major element of his development, it explains his costume and helps define his complexity.

The big alteration is the NY event that unites the globe. I think that the alien monster appearing in NY was a bit of randomness in the novel and the event appearing to be induced by Manhattan seems to be a bit more logical in the general idea of Ozymandias eliminating the Watchmen.

I thought the soundtrack distracted from the overall feel of the movie.

Overall though, I was still very pleased with the movie. The visuals were amazing. I did like the adaptation of the prose section. The acting and casting were well done. The death of Rorschach felt like the important moment it was supposed to be.

Patrick Wilson was very sexy in this movie too. Is that really Billy Crudup's penis? It was rather large.
