Finally saw it today. I think they did a good job of introducing each character and their personality with the exception of Uhura. Honestly, she was relegated to the role of superhero girlfriend. I think they came up with a good way to reboot the franchise and this gives them the ability to blaze some new territory. I hope they do just that ( Read more... )

True. Uhura was very under-used. That's why The Gamesters of Triskelion is one of my favorite episodes as she is actually given a bit more spotlight.

You didn't realize Spock's mother was Winona Ryder? I need to tear one of the corners off your gay card. Okay, three left-- if you lose them too, then you'll be a lesbian until you earn your card back.

I liked Uhura's character. I though the girlfriend part was very down-played.

I'm not 100% sure I like the new alternate reality-- sure Bones is cuter, but it's just them relying on a set of overdone (but recognizable) characters rather than breaking into new territory. Now it's bolding going where it's gone before, only with fewer Vulcans.

I'm not a real fan of Wynona. I guess I like the idea of an independent female character not defined by her relationships, a Tasha Yar if you will.

I think there is still lots of unmined potential in the Star Trek Universe, like how Enterprise elaborated more on the Andorians being one of the founding races of the Federation.
