I take it all back.  At 8:45 pm Pacific time this evening I received an email from the Director of Graduate Studies at UC Davis with an early acceptance offer for the PhD program.  I'll be hearing from him tomorrow to discuss specific details and funding information.

- I'm so relieved!  I really am worthy :)
