My Sister's Garden

Pictures from my sister's small but lovely garden taken in late May, 2008. The garden relies primarily on shape, form and foliage color rather than flowers. The first five pictues are of her front garden (and you can see that her next door neighbor employs a similar style in her front garden), while the others show her main garden behind her house ( Read more... )

A lovely garden and great photos. You can see all the careful choices of plants to give such texture.
Japanese maples are a favorites and all those hostas!

May is wonderful, isn't it.

One of my favorite garden months, when everything looks so fresh and lovely.

I deeply envy those Japanese maples, which would never grow for me just 15 miles away - my gardens are far too exposed.

Her garden has evolved beautifully. I love visiting. :-)

How colourful &...complete, in spite of a lack of flowers. Wow, I love the idea. Hmmm... ;)

Can you give us a general 'where in the US' she lives? I'm in the Pacific NW, but the non-rainy side...wondered how much could work here...

She lives near Madison, Wisconsin. That's Zone 5 and she has a fairly protected yard which really helps those Japanese maples to succeed. They wouldn't work for me. Though I'm only 15 miles away from her, my site is much more exposed and I consider it to be Zone 4.

There are annuals in the pots that add splashes of color and she has a number of clematis vines that add their bold flowers as well for a good part of the summer.

But I agree that she's done an amazing job of making it all so interesting without depending on blossoms.

Glad you like! :-)

ETA: And I LOVE your icon!

Wow! I am jealous. Do you think your sister would want to dig in some Maine dirt? LOL. I really must do something with my landscaping.. or lack thereof. Her yard is beautiful!
