Aaaaaand the only one I actually saw was "Letters To Juliet" (which, based on your to me still uncomprehensible rating system would be a 4 for me), but Paperman is on my to-watch-list.

Uncomprehensible? Really? Why so? It's so simple. First and foremost I take in consideration the script, the story altogether (which is the most important thing to me). Then I go to other factors such as acting, directing, soundtrack, charm, uniqueness, etc. And to finish it up comes the more subjective part: did I like it or not? Did I enjoy it or not? Was I bored or not? And so on... After that, voilá! The rating magically pops in my head. No rocket science.

Yet Helen gets only a 6 which is "slightly above average" even though you have nothing but praise for it. It's still confusing to me :(

Well, a "6" is a really nice rate on my book. Especially since I tend to judge films very severely. Like I said, Helen is a good film, but it's nothing outlandish, which -- unfortunately, and among other issues -- costs "points". It does well what it proposes to do (i.e. display real depression) without trying to fancy-fi; so, to me, it's a fair/honest rating.
