Episode Recap and Discussion - 1x02 - Hoosier Daddy

Jun 13, 2008 16:10

My icon gives this episode 2 thumbs up! I adored it. And this episode contained the moment that made me fall madly in love with the pairing of Marshall/Mary.

- I love how the episode starts out with this lovely scene of the little boy playing with this light music in the background, but there's a slightly surreal feel to it, and then he walks in on his mom getting shot (which we later find out actually happened differently). Wonderful way to start the episode, I was pulled in right away.

- Then we get to my lovely Mary/Marshall scene. I don't really know why, but them punching each other like a couple of 8 year olds on a playground and spilling Stan's coffee made me say, "Oh wow, these two were made for each other." I adore how Marshall can't resist teasing her, and then out of nowhere she just punches him. And he's not having any of that, so he punches her back. Her shock here is so great, but I think she's also kind of happy that he doesn't care if she's a woman. He's treating her as an equal in regards to strength and the ability to take care of one's self. Also, this is an instance where they retreat into a world where only they exist. I love it!

Bwhahahaha, I love Mary's face in that one.

"You're not a girl." I love the glee on his face there. He gets so much happiness from getting on Mary's nerves.

Intense staring is always a good thing. And I love how Stan seems so separate from them here.

And their amusement at spilling the coffee on Stan is just plain adorable. And little pink hearts are emitting from Marshall's eyes in this pic. It's true. ;)

- Mary gets Leo a family, and we see that she and the kid really click. And we find out that she can't whistle.

- Mary's mother and sister are really, really annoying, and apparently incompetent, because neither one seems to be able to hold down a job. One-Eyed Dan is disturbing.

- Mary and Marshall discuss One-Eyed Dan and look all badass in their police issue shades. Also, Marshall talks Mary out of getting a gift for Leo, which then makes her look bad when he shows up with a gift for him and she doesn't.

Mary's not happy. But she's probably a little amused. Nevertheless...

Marshall is promised to get a talking to. He knows he's in trouble, but it was totally worth it.

- Then Mary sees Marshall getting all gaga over the cute baby (awwwwwwwww)...

...and she says, "What's the deal with babies? I don't get them."

I find it interesting that she says this when Marshall takes the baby. She thought that Leo and the baby were cute, but once Marshall was being cute with the baby she was perplexed. I love it!

- Mary's mother finally gets a job... sort of.

- Leo's father wants custody back, and Mary fights with this dude who looks like a younger and taller version of Stan with hair. Also, Stan is adorable in this scene, and we see how much he really adores her.

- Marshall is a dweeb, which he proves by naming a bunch of card games that none of the other guys had ever heard of.

- Mary's mother and sister totally bomb in their pointless B-plot. Honestly, was there a point to that? Because it was just some random laughing and walking door to door that amounted to nothing but the makeup getting eaten. These two need a better storyline if they are going to have scenes completely unrelated to Mary. The actresses are definitely talented, because I've seen them in other things, but their characters on this show are just so terribly weak. I'd have to say that they are the only things that I did not like about Hoosier Daddy. I really hope that they grow on me in future episodes.

- Marshall makes many a girl swoon with his adorable jammies:

Hee. That's probably the moment that really made me fall in love with Marshall. I was in love with Mary right from the get-go, but Marshall took a little while to get the same devotion from me. Those jammies sealed the deal. And it's further proof that he's really an 8-year-old at heart. I also love that Mary calls Marshall "one badass lawman," in this scene. She definitely has respect for him, and she trusts him implicitly.

- We get a tender scene between Mary and Leo, and Leo worrying about his dad thinking he doesn't love him and Mary being so positive that he did know was a great insight into how she probably views her own father, who was also a criminal, and this was yet another way that she connected with this kid. It was a wonderful scene.

- Marshall pulls some badass lawman moves on Leo's dad.

- Leo almost gets shot, but Mary saves the day, woohoo! Then we learn that Leo accidentally shot his mother, but he doesn't realize it. Such a sad scene. And this is where Mary realizes that Leo's dad isn't such a bad guy, especially since he went to prison to conceal the fact that Leo shot his mother.

- Mary let's Leo's father know that she won't give him up. Then we get this lovely Mary/Marshall scene where Marshall agrees to do whatever she needs. First he teases her a bit though.

- So, the punching scene is what initially made me fall for Mary/Marshall, but this moment right here is what made me convinced that Marshall is already secretly in love with Mary (at least a little bit in love, anyway) and she has no clue:

Marshall: ♥ ♥ ♥

Mary: Finally, I meet a guy that gets me and he's 10. *hmph*
Marshall: ♥ ♥--wait, what?

Marshall: How... how could you even say that? :'(  I get you, Mary!  ME!  LOOK AT ME!

Marshall: She doesn't even know I'm alive, does she?  Psh, whatever.  I get her better than that kid does.  I do.  Really.

Oh Marshall. *sniff*  She'll appreciate you some day.  I know she will.

- And then we get a happy ending.  Awwwww.  Also, no matter how annoying Mary's family is, she still loves them.
