Light returns!

It's only a little more than 3 weeks since the solstice but already things are looking up. At 5:15pm (that's 17:15 for you right pondians) there is light in the sky. It probably helps a lot that it was a clear afternoon so there's no cloud cover. Nevertheless, progress!

I'm seeing a difference here too -- though we're enough further north that it was exciting to realize it wasn't quite dark at ten to five last Sunday. It helps that sunset actually starts getting earlier a week or two before solstice. In another month or so, I should start seeing the first faint glimmers of late-afternoon sun in my living room.

kent and I get up for our early swim class at the Y three times a week, and leave the house at 6:15am. so we see the sun from the other side - watching week by week as it gets a little lighter, and a little lighter, and finally there is actually dawn in the sky as we drive to the pool.

When we were in York, England last month - just a week before the solstice - sunrise was at 8:30 in the morning and then it was going down at 3:30pm. That's pretty far north, and a pretty short day. Although I do remember taking a student group to Durham (even farther north) in the 90s and having it get light at 4am and stay light until almost 11pm.

My first husband's parents lived in Alaska. We visited them once for Christmas -- it was, uh, interesting.
