Movie Reviews

May 28, 2007 18:58

I saw two movies over Memorial Day weekend -- Shrek the Third and Spider-Man 3.

The short review of both is the same: entertaining, but not as good as their predecessors.

Shrek the Third, in particular, I didn't like as much as the first two Shrek movies.

More detailed review, with spoilers, after the cut. )

When the Raimis were working on the story (and Alvin Sargent was fleshing it out), they discovered they had WAY too much material for one movie. They had, in fact, almost enough for two movies--Sandman (Tobey's personal request--he really liked Sandman in the comics) and New Goblin in SM3 (with an intro of the black suit) and Venom and Vulture in SM4. Raimi said they couldn't figure out how to end #3 in such a way that it could stand alone and still be a bridge to #4, so they cut the Vulture, sped up the intro of the black suit and Venom, and, voila.

I still think if they do SM4, it will be the Vulture and the Lizard. If they could figure out how to get Maguire to return ("Here, Mr. Maguire, here are the keys to your brand new Brinks truck, stuffed to the gills with money..."), I think Vulture and Lizard would make a killer #4 movie.

The main problem I see with the Vulture as the villain is that, in movie terms, he's not very impressive. He's an old man who can fly. For a movie, that's not much.

Now, as a fan of old movies, I think it would be cool to get an older star to play the Vulture. Peter O'Toole springs to mind, for some reason. But I kind of suspect that they'd want someone... sexier as a villain. Of course, that didn't stop them from casting whichever-Molina-it-was as Doctor Octopus, but he's a much better villain.

Now, I've long thought that Kraven the Hunter would make a good movie villain, especially if they base it on the Ultimate Spider-Man story wih him as a kind of evil Steve Irwin hunting Spider-Man. And for some reason, I keep envisioning and African-American actor in the role. I'm not sure which one, but I think it would work.
