Jumping in to say I am intrigued by your post, but don't have much time to read in length as present. My own Matthew ghosts come out of the shadows now and then. I struggle to keep them at bay. I do think, sadly, that S2 left out much of him thoughts and made him so inconsistent that it's so hard to know what he was in the first place.

Also, did you see the extended scene for S2 e4 shown in the US? It has a tiny moment where Matthew confesses to Mary that he is haunted by the war and she takes his wrist. It did change my opinion of him.

Yes, I saw that scene, and I'm currently working to incorporate it into my 2.04 analysis. It made me very happy for M/M for another reason.

Oh, I do want to hear your opinion on that! The points you make are so interesting. I wrote a piece on my own issues with Matthew in the CS. You can read: http://cyrillah.tumblr.com/post/16071053215/matthew-thoughts

Yeayy to your Tumblr! My points exactly! There's an answer to that, I promise! It'll all be revealed and it all makes sense! I feel I'm writing around the clock to get out my posts before someone else beats me to my point but I'm almost there now... YOU'LL LOVE THE RESOLUTION! I admit that the CS is very much plot-driven, but still... except for the proposal giggles (which I still don't like) Matthew will apologize by implication, in fact he's tasting his own medicine -- his own gall -- throughout the second half of the series anyway. So they're sort of even by the time he proposes. You'll see. It's nice.
