So I woke up this evening to find my Firefox is retarded.  Keeps giving me a crash report, and although it will start in safe mode, I can't get it to run normally.  Worked for an hour and a half on it, taking out all the prefs/extensions/etc, cleaned out all files on my computer, ran all the malware/virus checks, restarted, re-installed a billion ( Read more... )

Mine is like completely dead. When I go to open it, it just gives me a crash report automatically.

Honestly, using Chrome today and there is like no difference. It has all the same stuff, just in a different place.

Do the uninstall
delete the entire Mozilla Firefox folder in your Program Files.
go to C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data (I assume WinXP here) and delete the Mozilla Firefox folder there too.
Disable Antivirus program on your computer.
Reinstall Firefox.

This is a common problem. The problem is some antivirus programs interfering with installation, and the only full fix is to totally wipe the programs off the machine before reinstall. When some AV programs see you trying to copy a new DLL file over an existing one in the same place, they deny it because this is a common exploit for viruses to use -- copy a file to memory, inject the payload, write the DLL right back again. For what it's worth, Zonealarm or Kapersky don't screw up things on install/update.

Yeah we've told our faculty here to just start trying Chrome or even going back to IE instead of using Firefox. It's become so unreliable. I really like Chrome, personally.

I've had the same thing happen before on Firefox 8 or 9. It sucks because I like the browser but they are starting to kluge it up.

I had to do a complete delete (saving my bookmarks first with Mozbackup at http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com ) and then a complete reinstall to make it work again.

Like Shockwave said... and when you reinstall... don't put the latest one in... Install v 3.6 and see how that goes... (turn off updates)...

good lucks!

p.s. I hope my email reply arrived ok a couple weeks back.. ^v^
