In '99, we drove out to the wedding of a friend of Steve's--the bride grew up in Wyoming, so that was the location of the wedding.
Along the way, we stopped to see my father's home town in SW Minnesota, and the most logical way to proceed from there was to go through South Dakota, stopping to see Mount Rushmore and the Devil's Tower. Before we headed toward the eastern edge of Yellowstone and the town where the wedding was being held, we detoured north into Montana in order to see the Little Big Horn battlefield and museum.
