scifishipper left 'Laura/Tom he did save her after all!' as a prompt over at kink, and while it didn't really get to a 'post at kink story' stage, it did give me this.

"Thank you."
Tom's hand flew to his face, fingers awkwardly pausing on the edge of the glasses he was wearing. He tapped against them, trying to make the sudden action not seem so awkward. He didn't want to remove them lest her calm voice was hiding some kind of mockery. He had been doing his best to hide his failing eyesight from everyone. "What?"
"For saving me."
He looked up over the rim of his glasses to where Laura was leaning in the doorway of his small office. "Your political career revived itself." Much like she had revived herself after her fight with cancer. Getting the truth from her about that event had certainly been interesting.
"That's not what I meant. On New Caprica."
Tom still wasn't one hundred percent sure she wasn't mocking him for something, but right then he felt reasonably certain it wasn't the glasses. He took them off and folded them on top of the pile of paperwork he had been working through.
"In front of the firing squad."
Apparently she thought his memory was failing along with his eyesight.
"You might have only been alive a moment longer if Tyrol hadn't showed up." Not to mention he recalled her body slamming into his before they went off that cliff. Maybe her memory was failing.
"I believe I'm still allowed to thank you." Laura crossed the room, stopping in front of him and laying her hands on his desk.
She had to lean forward to do so and he had a rather unobstructed view down her shirt. Had he fallen asleep? Was he going mad? Tom looked but didn't stare, far too caught up in trying to interpret the expression on her face. What game was she playing?
"I guess you owe me now." He folded his hand next to his glasses, sitting straighter in his chair.
"I'd say this makes us even, actually."
"Oh?" She still didn't hold Valance against him, did she?
"Right after the attacks, when the fleet was still coming together, the wardens on the Astral Queen wanted to throw all the prisoners out into space, conserve resources."
Word of that plan had gotten to them. When it didn't happen but the threats still remained, Tom had figured it had just been a way to try and control them. Be good or be dead.
"I told them no."
And they listened to her. Had they been scared or relieved?
"Then what-"
She leaned down and kissed him. Her lips were warm and soft, and with his mouth still slightly parted mid-word, her teeth caught his lower lip a moment before she pulled back.
His hands knocked against his glasses in his haste to move them, and he caught her shoulders, not wanting her to get too far away. He was pulled too close to his desk in order to stand without letting go of her, and as he moved towards her as best he could, she surprised him again by meeting him halfway. It was a strange angle, he had never had to deal with a partner above him like this before. Tom could only tighten his grip on her shoulders, unsure if he would be able to get a hold of her again if he were to let go. The lips covering his parted for his tongue, and he felt one of her hands cradle the side of his face. She moaned and he had a fleeting moment to appreciate the sound before a stab of pain had him drawing back.
Startled, he let go of her, tasting blood from where her teeth had cut his tongue. Laura stood, fingers hovering over her lips. They stared at each other and he didn't bother to try and hide his shock.
"Goodnight Tom."
