That was a lot of wasted build up.

"There were two muffins in the oven and the first turned to the other and said 'Gee it's hot in here' and the other muffin said "AHHHHH!!!!!! A talking muffin!'" would have sufficed just fine.

That's the idea. The punchline is in the fact that the buildup was for a different joke entirely.
