Character Info:

Fandom: The cult game Yume Nikki (Wiki Page!, Fandom Wikia Page! and  a video of the mars event. )
Name: Sentimental Komuro Michael Sakamoto Dada-sensei (but people refer to him as Seccom Masada instead, or simply Masada with an optional '-sensei' at the end)
Age: Unknown
User Icon: Here!

Physical Description of Character: Masada looks odd. Very much so. In short, he's extremely pale, has black hair that reaches his chin and his eyes are really wonky. He only ever dresses in black and simply settles for wearing the same clothes day after day. One of his eyes appears to be fairly normal, but the other one is always pointing upwards. While it's never specified if he has any issues with his eyesight in canon, I play him as suffering from poor depth perception (with him being especially prone to misjudging distances and walking into stuff) because seriously, there's no way he can see just fine with those wonky eyes. He's commonly portrayed as being very tall, with long limbs to add, enough for him to tower over just about anyone he meets. However, despite his height, Masada isn't very intimidating at first glance due to him being so thin and looking so frail.

Finally, have a picture to help give a general idea of what he looks like.

Point in Canon: After his death

Personality: Note: This is a theory. Not canon. There are no established personalities in Yume Nikki, only little hints here and there for each player to interpret in their own way, and Masada's personality depends entirely on what theory one decides to go with. I'll provide explanations for my theories and point out things that supports them here and there, but I really recommend that you read the history section first.

Masada is, in several ways, a lost cause. Completely broke, hopelessly addicted to drugs and almost completely alone, he was pretty much living on borrowed time and his death, while tragic, was far from unexpected. He’s well aware of this and tends to just accept that he’s a classic case where just about everything that could go wrong actually went wrong with him displaying little denial of his own shortcomings. But deep down, he’s ashamed of his life, in particular of how his death could possibly have been avoided, and he’s prone to muse upon the things that could have been. “If only I’d done this instead of that”, “I wish I hadn’t been so stupid” and so on. He deeply regrets not being able to stay with her for at least a little longer. In game, he seems to turn his back on Madotsuki pretty often, suggesting that he have in fact displayed some difficulties with properly facing her, most likely because of feelings of both shame and guilt.

In the game, Masada is found in a spaceship that is almost entirely empty, save for some furniture, completely alone. While the player (Madotsuki) can ‘speak’ with him, doing so only results in a beeping noise (that those who have played the classic Mario games might recognize), suggesting that he speaks a language that Madotsuki can’t understand. This represents several things all at once, mostly his feelings of loneliness and alienation. Masada felt that people just couldn’t understand him and that he simply didn’t fit in with the rest of society. But he was (and still is, for that matter) a somewhat difficult person to understand and connect with, hence why he ended up becoming so lonely. He didn't even bother trying to make any friends due to fear of being rejected and ended up keeping to himself, turning to his music and simply ignoring the things that were going on around him, until Madotsuki came along. A fellow outcast with a somewhat similar personality, she was easy for him to relate to and bond with.

He has little confidence in himself and tends to often assume the worst, though this is understandable, considering the way he has managed to mess up in the past. Both his insecurities and his life in general have also lead to him having a fairly nervous nature, practically unable to ever truly relax and be at ease. Masada is almost always expecting bad things to happen. Pretty much your typical gloomy pessimist. But really, after a life full of making almost nothing but bad decisions and where things just went so wrong, it's no wonder that Masada is the pessimist he is. He's used to the flow of things not going his way and to being unable to affect them due to a lack of strength (of both the mental and physical kind), hence why he simply accepts that something can go terribly wrong at any time and that he'll be powerless to stop it.

The spaceship also represents that on one hand, he’s fairly simple-minded and doesn’t need much to be happy, aside from his music. He’s always found at a large piano in the game and as mentioned above, the spaceship is very empty, which supports this theory. The spaceship is also completely in black and white, which I believe symbolize his general simple-mindedness. As long as he can play his beloved music in peace, he'll be at least somewhat content. On the other hand, he always had serious issues to deal with in life, the most prominent of which was a severe lack of money due to his addiction, and later, the fatal consequences of said addiction which led to his death. So despite Masada's generally simple-minded nature, it takes time to truly come to know (and understand) him. However, this doesn't mean that he's outright impossible or unpleasant to deal with - he's just very docile, very awkward and very passive. While he's nice and courteous enough, expecting him to actually initiate anything will usually just lead to disappointment, unless you happen to be Madotsuki.

History of the Character: Note: This is a theory. Not canon. There is no real information about anyone's past in Yume Nikki, only little hints here and there for each player to interpret in their own way. I'll provide explanations for my theories and point out things that supports them here and there, and it's recommended that you read this section first. Please see the footnotes below for theory supports.

(Masada was born and raised in Japan. He grew up in a fairly average household but suffered from being constantly pressured by parents that simply expected too much out of him all at once. As a result, he turned to music as an escape. He didn’t bother to socialize and make any friends, which in turn resulted in him becoming a bit of a recluse. And living like that worked out just fine at first, but by simply using his music as a means of escaping reality, Masada was essentially just ignoring the problem, which only caused the stress to keep building up. But he didn’t care. In his world, nothing but music mattered. As he kept going on like this, slowly losing touch with reality, his grades dropped considerably.

And so it happened that in reality finally caught up with him in college. The bottled-up stress became too much at last and after both rather miserable performances on several tests and an attendance record that left a lot to be desired, Masada ended up getting thrown out of school. His parents were furious. How could he let himself stoop that low? Wasn’t he grateful for all they’d done? After that, he just gave up. It was obvious that things weren’t going to work out. The little bubble that he’d lived in for several years had finally been popped.

So he decided to leave, to go somewhere far away where nobody would know him and he would be left alone. Tokyo would be perfect. It would be easy to just ‘vanish’ and then keep a low profile in a big city like that. Masada took his savings, a few of his most precious belongings and just got on the first train he could catch.

It worked out well enough at first. He got himself a place to live and made a living by taking on odd jobs. But it wasn’t long before he found himself in serious debt, barely able to afford the rent and sometimes not even having enough money to buy food. It wasn’t long before alcohol entered the picture. An easy way to temporary forget about everything. But it wasn’t until later, when Masada discovered drugs, that everything just went so horribly wrong. He became addicted in no time. (1)

Completely broke and slowly losing himself to an addiction that he didn’t have the strength to fight, he only kept working for the sake of feeding said addiction. After a while of having no job and thus no stable income, he ended up resorting to playing music out in the streets in the hopes of making at least some kind of profit. Through a most peculiar turn of fate, his talent ended up catching the eye of a married couple who ended up hiring him to tutor their daughter, Madotsuki.

It turned out that Madotsuki and Masada not only had similar personalities, but they both had very serious problems to deal with. They bonded quickly and became very close, with Madotsuki often spending the night at Masada’s place (platonically!). (2)

But one day, things came to an abrupt end.

Masada died of an overdose. (3)

Now, you might be thinking something like “Hold on a second! You didn’t mention the event in the dream world as a part of his history!”

Well, you see, that’s a bit complicated.

As I’ve previously mentioned, Masada is found in the “Mars” event which involves Madotsuki boarding a spaceship that ends up crashing on an alien planet that is referred to as “Mars”. The Mars event as a whole represents Masada, his relation to and history with Madotsuki, his personality and finally, the details regarding his death. So no, the event that happens in the dream world is not a part of his personal history because 1)Masada has already died in real life by the time Madotsuki begins to explore the dream world, and 2)everything in the dream world is just part of Madotsuki’s mind.

Lastly, I would like to stress one more time that this is a theory (one out of very many) and is as such, not canon.

(1) The spaceship in the Mars event is a metaphor for being high, which is a subtle way of showing that Masada was addicted to drugs. It's a very empty place. There are only a few pieces of furniture, which is a way of showing that his home was also very empty, most likely due to a lack of money. High + lack of money = probably drugs. I'll admit that most of this section is just my take on why he turned to drugs in the first place.

(2) Again, there's a bit of headcanon here. Anyway, there's a large table with two chairs in the spaceship. Madotsuki may use his bed if she wishes to do so (and she must do this in order to trigger the crash), which represents both that he welcomes her and that they were very close.

(3) The ship crashing symbolizes Masada's death. Madotsuki and Masada both have zero control of the situation, alarms are going off, there's panicking and everything is just very chaotic. This symbolizes his overdose. His 'crash', if you will.

Magical Powers/Skills: He plays the piano! And he's pretty darn good at it, too.

Weapons: None.

Writing samples:

Personal LJ Sample:

[He sits down, holding the LP in front of his face. Is it a cell phone? Masada's not sure, It's been forever since he had one of those, after all. And really, this could just be some kind of crazy new model. But why would there be any need for a cell phone here? Oh well  Hopefully, he'll remember how to use one of these...]

" So much green. It's... Peaceful. And quiet. Not like... I imagined this... To be, though. "

Third-Person Sample:

It seemed that winter had decided to arrive early in Tokyo this year. It was so cold outside that Masada partly just wished he could stay inside all day and not bother with anything. He’d never been a fan of cold weather or even of the winter season in general. It was too expensive. Christmas celebrations, New Years celebrations, clothes that could prevent him from being frozen to the core by the cold winds… And of course, the cost of keeping his apartment warm. All those were things that he simply couldn’t afford. Of course, he only truly had himself to blame for that.

However, this year would be different. This year he had something important that needed to be done. Something to focus on.

Madotsuki.

Neglecting to give her anything would just be plain tactless. Besides, she deserved to get something nice. Her parents probably weren’t going to get her any thoughtful gifts (assuming they would get her any gifts in the first place), so taking matters into his own hands seemed like a solution that would be reasonable enough. But it would take time before he’d have enough money to afford a gift.

Oh well. It would be worth it in the end, he thought to himself as he put on that worn-out coat of his, picked up his keyboard and made his way outside onto the crowded street.

oh lol so much TL;DR it's not even funny

PERMISSIONS

★ Threadhopping with this character-yes, no, or what? Sure! Unless the post is locked to a character. Common sense and courtesy, please.
☆ Hugging this character? Sure! But a fair warning: Masada is not too huge on the whole "intimacy" thing and might not react well to getting, say, glomped by someone he doesn't know. Especially without warning.
★ Giving this character a kiss? As I said, he's not too big on the whole deal with intimacy and might not react well to getting kissed, but feel free to do so anyway. Just be prepared for, at the very minimum, quite a bit of flailing.
☆ Punching this character (provided they are given an opportunity to fight back)? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT Oh, go right ahead. Feel free to beat him into a pulp if you want to (but for serious injuries/heavy beatings I'd appreciate it if you could ask me OOCly first). Any defense he puts up will be pretty pathetic. Just keep in mind that Madotsuki probably will beat the shit out of your character/unleash the fucking fury/stab them if she finds out that they hurt him.

★ Is there anything you do not want mentioned near this character? There's practically nothing that I'll get pissed about OOCly, but there are a few touchy subjects ICly, in particular anything that is related to his addiction and his death. Oh, and telling him exactly how weird he looks directly to his face will be met with some woobieness. And of course, saying anything bad about Madotsuki won't exactly score you any love points with him.

☆ Is there anything you need us to know about interacting with this character? Special physical features, fighting abilities, stuff: Masada is a fairly messed-up individual. He's very reserved, quiet and withdrawn. So no, he's not going to be able to perfectly read the mood constantly. Expanding on that, Masada isn't a strong person. He's not going to be anyone's mighty knight in white armor. Emotional support and someone to talk to, sure. But expecting him to come and save you from that giant dragon/evil overlord? That will only lead to disappointment.

He's not too crazy about getting all touchy feely and intimate, so anyone who pursues a relationship with him, be it of a friendly nature or something naughtier will find themselves having to work in order to get him out of his shell. And he likely won't catch on to any flirting or subtle cues. He's not dumb, but you have to be somewhat clear with this guy. If you want to, say, hug him without giving the poor fellow a minor panic attack, show your intentions or just ask him if it's okay.

Contrary to some of my icons, Masada does have a nose and a mouth. His eyes are really wonky and he has difficulties with clearly seeing things right in front of him, judging distances and reading small (or otherwise hard to read)  text. Due to his tendency of speaking very softly, it can be hard to make out what he's trying to say at times. He's also pretty weak physically and has low endurance. Last but not least, he's really skinny and as light as a feather and thus he can easily be carried/dragged/manhandled around.
