Chapter 2
Seeming to have convinced himself, Cooper gave the order. “Reddington, make the call.”
“Oh I can't. It’s Mr. Kaplan's day off.”
“Her day off?” Ressler scoffed. “Do you offer a dental plan and matching 401k as well?”
“And profit sharing.” Reddington added.
“I know you said it's Mr. Kaplan's day off, but you said we have to act today.”
“Poor Eustace.” Reddington shrugged. “What can you do.”
“You can call her.” Ressler suggested.
Reddington shook his head. “I couldn't possibly call her.”
“I'll call her.” Liz suggested.
Ressler raised an eyebrow. “You have Mr. Kaplan's number?”
“She gave it to me. For emergencies.”
Liz punched in the number and put it on speaker phone.
There was an irritating noise followed by the recorded message.
I'm sorry. The number you have reached is no longer in service. Please check the number and try your call again.
“Mr. Kaplan's phone has been disconnected!” Liz unnecessarily announced to the others. As she moved her finger, getting ready to end the call, Dembe stopped her.
He told her. “That's Kate's voice mail.”
“Of course it is.” Ressler grimaced and shook his head.
Liz's eyes narrowed watching Reddington frown and bite his lip as they waited.
Sure enough after repeating the message a second time - by which time any sane person would have hung up - there was a beep.
The mailbox you are calling is full. Goodbye.
Liz waited.
Dembe told her. “That's not Kate's voice mail anymore. You can disconnect now.”
“What now?” Ressler asked.
Liz stared at Reddington. He already had her concerned and now this? “What's really going on?”
