10 films of 2007

If last year was the year of the documentaries for me (The Ister and When the Levees Break both ranking high on my top 10) this year is the year of duos with 3 of 10 films coming from two person teams (No Country, Europa, and Darkness). While I was less than enthusiastic about Battle in Heaven, I'd be very surprised if Silent Light ( Read more... )

2 Days in Paris (Julie Delpy)
Away from Her (Sarah Polley)
The Brave One (Neil Jordan)
Breach (Billy Ray)
Into the Wild (Sean Penn)
Michael Clayton (Tony Gilroy)
A Mighty Heart (Michael Winterbottom)
Mr. Bean's Holiday (Steve Bendelack)
Paris Je T'aime (various)
Sunshine (Danny Boyle)

I didn't have the chance to see a number of movies I had anticipated, like I'm Not There and Control. But as I age into my twenties I find my taste moves more freely along with the Hollywood filmmaking of adult, mature directors without much fuss (Tony Gilroy with Michael Clayton, Billy Ray with Breach), or productions that still aspire to bring pleasure to their audience (Mr. Bean's Holiday). There may have been no genuine art movie I saw that I liked. Away from Her, Into the Wild, A Mighty Heart, and Sunshine may claim the closest to that distinction: Away from Her with its quiet depiction of memory, loss, and forgiveness; Into the Wild with its big-budget-with-an-indie-heart; A Mighty Heart with its fierce worldly awareness; Sunshine with its ( ... )

i'm amazed.there are not so many people in the world who agree with me that the Dardennes short is the year's best.it didn't provoke any scandal in the Cannes as the ones by Lars von Trier or Cronenberg + it sums up their previous movies about mercy.people are weak.one should be good-hearted and kiss the thief's hand.hail to the thief!in addition,i love the expression on Rosetta's face in the short.i also was crying in the death scene in Bresson's au hazard,Balthazar.it shows the essence of solitude.that's why this short stirred me+the music....
