MY BEST OF 2008 LIST

Dec 18, 2008 00:53

So the year is almost over and it is time for my annual list. I hope the following is useful to those looking for new film and music. I would very much like to check out others' lists and would be happy to burn a mixtape with some of my top music of 08 on it if anyone is interested. Comments and discussion are always fun too.

I always look forward to your top 10's. Thanks for sharing! I liked your link to Juan Cole's review of Quantum too -- a lot of that was in my mind as I read the reviews as well. And I'm looking forward to seeing Gomorrah, whenever it comes out on DVD that is.

Thanks for reading. Apropos the Bond write-up, I just finished Tariq Ali's 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and he writes about how companies privatized the Bolivian water supply and going so far as to make it illegal to collect your own rainwater in the country! Also, you'll have to tell me what you think of Gomorrah when you see it.

This is the most interesting top 10 of '08 film list I've seen yet. A few of these are coming out here in the UK in the early part of next year (Synechdoche NY, 35 Rhums, Tokyo Sonata) and I'll undoubtedly catch them then. Calvaire was incredibly memorable so I'm eager to see the director's new one... ditto your #1 & #2 films, which I hadn't heard of - thes etwo do make me excited for new films. The one I've seen, the Haneke, didn't do much for me, but he either makes me riveted or annoyed depending on the film, heh.

I've been waiting an age to see California Dreamin' (Endless), which is teetering at the top of my online rental list, and was, if I remember right, your fave of last year?

Thank you for the comments. I'm hoping others from Art of Vision put up their top 10s (perhaps we could start a thread like we have in the past). I know a few others (some Haneke fans) I've spoken with recently share your feelings of being unimpressed with the latest Haneke. Most of them didn't care for it the first time around. I think a lot of people saw it in the same way as I saw Martyrs (which definitely has its fans but I really disliked). But what fascinates me the most about Funny Games is the idea of difference through repetition.
Hope you enjoy California Dreamin' when you finally get it... you're right, it was my favourite film of last year but having now seen a few that I missed from 2007 I would say that it is now tied at first with the equally impressive 'Terror's Advocate' by Barbet Schroeder. I'm now looking forward to seeing his latest 'Inju, the Beast in the Shadow.'
