So I'm woken at 6:40 in the morning after having worked until 1am by the battery indicator on my smoke alarm. BIP! In fact, it takes a good half hour for the 1/2-second-long BIPs that come at anything from one- to five-minute intervals to become unbearable enough to get me out of bed and before I realise they are coming from INSIDE my apartment, ( Read more... )

I had a similar incident with a smoke alarm that ended with it being ripped from the wall and binned. I'd rather take my chances in a fire.

Yes, except for me it would be a choice between not being able to sleep because my smoke alarm is keeping me up or not being able to sleep because I have visions of myself being engulfed by flames. And for someone who regularly forgets to switch her stove and/or iron off before leaving the house, the former is probably preferable. Stupid limited options.
