I'm still surprised by the disconnect between how much freedom {of speech} people assume they have and the reality.

That's because most of the people do not need freedom of speech. They mostly need a house, a grocery shop, a mall and a club. And if police asks to show ID or go away, they just follow the directions :)

I think you're right - people confuse "Freedom to have what I want" with "Freedom" in general.
