I might be almost on my way towards catching up! Probably I'll get through this thing! Maybe not... But at least I have something to say. And plus I can get through a couple of the shorter cases in 3 in one day, I'm sure. Maybe I'll be able to do this...? OH WELL
Turnabout Reunion: Dammit Maya, how many times does Phoenix have to bail you out of a murder charge....? I'm glad they didn't do this again in the third game, just because it gets pretty unbelievable at a certain point. I guess they did charge two Maya analogues, though. Maggey and Iris are kind of Maya analogues to me, though Maggey more because she's a huge spaz. The spirit channeling pretense was a little weak.. Why would they charge her? Although I did like it when Franziska acknowledged that spirit channeling is real and all that. That was kind of a cool insight into the world.
I think this is actually one of the more brilliant and well-put-together denouments in the series, just because it incorporated all sorts of things we learned throughout the case, and still managed to have a few surprises. As opposed to Case 1-2, where it was a deus ex machina by the end, and Case 1-3, where the motivations of the murderer are not explained until the end, 2-2 gives you all the tools to figure it out on your own. Facial reconstruction surgery, car accidents, spirit mediums, it all comes down to one thing. Mimi tried to get away from what she'd done, and she failed. But they give you all the tools to figure that out on your own and I really love that.
As for me, I managed to gleek that Ini was really Mimi but I didn't go far enough to think that the reason she had to do it was because otherwise Maya would be trying to channel someone who was alive. I can't imagine what Mimi thought when Grey came to her for advice. (ALSO WHY DID HE!? DID HE NOT REALIZE!? Actually he seems like a pretty insensitive guy, I'm sure he didn't even think how she would feel about it. And who knows, if it had actually been Ini, she might have been cool with it. She seemed to be pretty damn laid back through the Mimi lens...) I really feel like this is one of the cases where you can best understand the motivations of the true doer. (As opposed to many of the other cases... I'm looking at you 2-3, 3-4, and 4-3...)
Turnabout Big Top! Not one of my favorite cases... But then again, I really like a lot of the premises of the characters. The soft-spoken ventriloquist with a gregarious dummy, the sparkly super-cute but naive circus girl, the clown who tells dumb jokes and is rarely prone to fits of ennui, the crazy super-gay magician... And then there's Acro. I love that they had all these completely wacky and out there characters and then one completely genuine if completely out of his mind guy who ends up being the killer. I think Acro was the only murderer who I felt genuine sympathy for. He was absolutely nuts, but it was understandable... The circus just isn't equipped to deal with a parapalegic and the associated depression, much less someone who lost his brother and his legs in the same incident. I think without his realizing it, his worldview was at least as warped by growing up in the circus as Regina. And it's depth like that, even if you have to think about it to find it, that really make me love the Ace Attorney series.
Highlights for me:
-I didn't realize until this time around that Ben's mouth moves when Trilo talks. That is beautiful! Details... :D
-Choices: Pain equals bad or Push on anyway... HAHA OH GOD PHOENIX WHAT. "THE FIRST PUPPET MARRIAGE IS HISTORICUL" You are such a tard. The other choices in this game are pretty hilarious too, like when Regina asks Wright to do something and all the choices are "YES I WILL!"-like. Man, what a pedo you are, Wright.
-The judge being all wistful over love during Trilo's testimony made me really feel for him. Why? I BLAME CAMS >:(
-Regina finally getting it was pretty sad and cute, also everyone giving Max milk.
-I kind of question the morality of telling Regina Bat will wake up when Moe has pretty much out and out told you that he is brain dead and never coming back. But I guess Phoenix does sort of live in a dream world. :|
