I think it wiser and better to be taken in as a fool than to not give of yourself. It's... hard to explain properly. I never was good at explaining myself. But basically, if you give of yourself with intent to help someone, and they deceive you, did you not still give? Is not the problem on their end? You can't control what other people can do, only what you do. Of course, if alternatives such as what you did, exist, I highly recommend taking them.
But then again, there's also the warning against being vigilant against falsehoods and false teachings and that maybe could apply here too and now I've argued away my own argument.
Dang.
Maybe every time you come across a person in need of money, politely refuse and then go donate twice as much as you would have given the person to a reputable charity.
