After tonight's episode I had to write something short and wish-fulfillmenty, because I spent the last five minutes of the episode going, "Tell him, Sammy! Tell him!" Dammit, Sam.
Title: Getting the words right
Characters: Sam, Dean
Rating: PG
Word count: 246
Summary: Takes place right before "Jump the Shark." Sam tells Dean about the demon blood thing.
Spoilers for: "On the Head of a Pin." "Jump the Shark" too, if you consider it a spoiler that Sam has good oral hygiene. (Gasp!)
“Dean, I’ve been drinking demon blood.” Sam’s voice hitched on the last word. No taking it back now. He took a deep breath, closing his eyes so he couldn’t see his brother’s face, and tried to explain. “I know you’ve never liked Ruby, and you’re gonna like her even less for this, but she’s just trying to help me, doing this. It makes me stronger. I don’t know why, but it does. I need to be strong enough to fight when the time comes - need to be strong enough to protect you, like you protected me all those years. Dean, if you died again and there was any chance I could’ve stopped it…I wouldn’t survive that. I’d rather be some kind of unsympathetic freak than lose you again.”
Sam unclenched his eyes and looked sideways at his brother’s face. Dean curled up at an awkward angle in the passenger seat of the Impala, his cheek flattened against the window. His mouth was partly open, emitting soft snores.
Sam sighed. “Maybe leave out the part about Ruby,” he told himself. “That’ll only make him madder.”
Dean gave a small snort and turned his head to mush his nose against the glass.
Sam swallowed. Maybe one of these days he’d have the guts to say all this when Dean was awake. Right now, his insides were churning and his mouth tasted metallic and slightly rancid, like demon blood. Getting out of the car, he grabbed his toothbrush.
