I've been utterly sucked into Tumblr and all but abandoned this LJ for the last few months, sorry. But some pieces don't play nicely with Tumblr's formatting. This is one of them.
All the little details, Sherlock's room looking out onto a brick wall, the fact that he's smoking again (without John's good influence), the pose of him sat in the chair, the blood seeping around his fingernail . . .
This is so very, very lovely. It seems so simple at first, and then you come back to it and find the details, the subtle storylines. The widest panels are probably the most evocative, especially the newspapers&gun&cigarettes one - Sherlock's stance is beautifully intense.
Also, and this is a bit of a weird compliment but considering your banner you'll probably see what I mean - interestingly, I once read a comment of Bill Watterson's regarding how difficult it is to draw rain realistically. For some reason, that third panel of yours brought it back to mind; it's got the same feel to it as those panels of Calvin waiting for his school bus in the morning rain. That little splash on the side, especially, is excellent.
I also rather love your use of splashing colours and smooth, curving ink lines - there's something almost calligraphical to it, which works very well. Overall, this is such a subtle, intense piece. Thank you for drawing it.
eta: also, man, your hands, the knuckles, can I just, wow.
Thank you so much! Watterson is one of my heroes and a huge influence in both my art and writing - I actually had his Calvin waiting in the rain at the bus stop comics in mind when I was drawing that panel! And I've been working hard on refining an inking style lately, so. All kinds of flattered. :)
DUUUUUDE YOU NEED TO ACCOUNTABILIBUDDY WITH ME ON COMICS
Seriously, making this reminded me just how fun making comics can be. I'm making it a goal to do a whole bunch of short comics this year leading up to doing something long-form.
