Deep thoughts by Howard Zinn

Once in awhile, I actually get around to reading some of the 10 billion books I order from Amazon.com. Here's an interesting excerpt from one of them ( Read more... )

And for this piece of enlightenment you actually ordered the Zinn's book from Amazon.com? Ummmmmm...did you actually go to college or just wave at one when you drove past?

You and Zinn must both be living in caves--what he speaks of has always been so and always will be. Until the people revolt, nothing will change. Power to the People! Power to the People, right on!

I understand that you feel very bold by challenging the quote by simply saying (anonymously, I might add), "that's just the way it is ( ... )

Things have changed???

Where?

In case you haven't noticed--and I grant you things in the Bay Area (as is all of California)--are really terrific (well, don't count the projects)--EVERY FUKKING DAY the line between the rich and the poor/working class get further apart everyday.

And this doesn't include the erosion of Civil Liberties that your Lord and Evil-Master, General (please call me Adolf) George Bush takes from the people under the guise of "patriotism." The people haven't fought (or only a small mass have, perhaps), they just swallow whatever Adolf says, smile and say: "Thank you, Boss."

Look around.

Talk about living in a bubble, Bubba, you be the one living there.

And friend, ain't nothing wrong with Kansas that an ocean couldn't cure.

Dude...I'm really fucking pissed at Live Journal. I just spent 40 minutes writing a long and thoughtful response to your post, chock full of history, class economics and sociology, but it exceeded the character limit and when I went back it was all erased. Great.

I really don't feel like rewriting all 6000 characters, so I will say this:

You seem to be a liberal. You have problems with the current administration and class stratification, yet you slam me for posting socialist ideas. I don't get it.

How can you say Zinn just speaks out? He's been arrested like 20 times for non-violent demonstration; he was beaten during the Freedom Rides, he's spoken as an expert witness in TONS of civil disobedience cases, many times resulting in a complete acquittal, he was an incredibly active member of the civil rights from very early on, and now, as an old man he spreads the message that you mention to millions of readers: If you have a problem with your government, fight it, and change it. I don't think he 'believes' people are acting as much as he tells them that they can, and should act...because it's been done before and been successful. He has first-hand knowledge of that. He's certainly not apathetic! In fact, he is one of the most passionate authors I have read...and his life proves it. Have you read much of his work? Try reading "Declarations of Independence" or "You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train", and then tell me he doesn't care about what he's talking about ( ... )

And I'm really surprised you treat the power of words so lightly.

True, actions are often responsible for change...but those actions are always inspired by words.

Ahhhhhh...a variation of the chicken or the egg theory. Which came first, the action or the words? My nickle goes with the action.

And what makes you think I value words lightly? You Californians (Oh to bask in the superior sun of the west coast, where all is pure and flawless) think that the rest of us poor folk must be barefoot and illiterate.

Contrary to your opinion my friend, I'm neither a Liberal nor a Right-winger--I'm a Bolshevic.
