FemShep + Saren or Garrus, pet AU

sort of inspired by the slavery prompt on the last meme, but since I'm running in a different direction (and different pairing?) thought I should post here rather than risk derailing that one.
AU premise: turians are considered like animals rather than sapient beings and commonly kept as pets by other species. There are some free turians, but they're considered "feral" and pests at best. At worst, they're considered dangerous and are eliminated.
Somehow, Shepard finds herself responsible for rehabilitating a captured feral turian. She gets a lot more than she bargained for. In the end, either she finds her eyes opened to the plight of the turians, who are sapient beings after all, or the turian winds up well-trained and loyally Stockholm'd.
I'm not picky on whether it ends up as a pairing or not... and while I am partial to Saren or Garrus, I'm open to the idea of it being another turian as well.

Well this is interesting so far, huh. Deeply curious where you're going to take it. Also sort of losing my mind trying to figure out which turian it is- both the one sin the promp title have blue eyes.

Whoops, sorry. It's definitey my Garbear (it's always my Garbear). Also, I need to stop calling him that. Also also, I seem to have a real'problem with abusing Garrus, so you've been warned. (Sorry, anon. Sorry, Garrus.)

Interesting prompt and fill. Wonder if Shep's new turian will cock block her dates or even outright interrupting intimate times like some pets have been known to do,

Not dead, good anon. Have a couple thousand more words down, but things keep shifting, so I may need to finish it before revision and posting. Coming soon, though.

A few minutes later, her turian was settled on the floor with a bowl of … well, not quite kibble. The pieces of whatever-it-was were big enough for him to pick up, kinda like the giant shredded wheat blocks. Except, nothing with those fucking teeth was going to be eating wheat. Shepard sat on the couch, flipping through the turian raising guide. She guessed he must be full grown, as he towered over her. Jeez, she hoped he was full grown. Something else in the book caught her eye
