Nouveau jeu - Femshep/Garrus

Unprompted (but inspired by the Kmeme).
Rolling around in my head for a while - inspired by one of the many "New Game" stories here and on FF.net. (speaking of which, I wish the original A!A of "New Game" would come back! I LOVE that story!) Anyhow...
In this story it's Garrus who goes back to the beginning - only to find that Shepard isn't quite how he remembers her.
First fanfic by me, pardon grammatical issues, I'm a fast typist but a lousy proofreader and this is a little rough in spots. I might not be able to update quickly as I have a crazy schedule. I have several chapters started, but very few finished. Feedback welcome. If you guys like it I might do some editing and post over on one of those other sites.

By the time the next shift was over and Shepard still hadn’t made an appearance Garrus was beginning to get worried. Worried enough to even make his way up to the CIC and see if she’d been up. Pressley hadn’t seen her, or so he claimed. The XO was rather short in answering him, and didn’t go into detail. Joker hadn’t seen her in the cockpit, either. Chakwas claimed to have seen her early in the morning; she’d spoken with Alenko for a few minutes before grabbing some food and heading back up into her cabin

He scratched the back of his head; at least she was direct. “I, ah, hadn’t seen you on your usual rounds. Just wanted to see if you were alright after our outing yesterday.” He held out the bottle. “And I brought some refreshment.”
“Checking up on me?” She leaned forward to read the bottle. “Peppermint schnapps?” She snorted, one corner of her mouth lifting. “That’s your idea of a peace offering

Her eyes narrowed dangerously, glittering beneath her lashes.. “I don’t see how that’s any of your business, but if you must know I allow Alenko to play nice because Alenko IS nice. It’s your motives I don’t trust

Hehe... I think that the crack he was able to find and the wall he trespassed is going to come down more often now and out of her own accord, too.
Once he had seen her "without the mask", she might start to seek him out so that she can take the mask out.
It's so intriguing and, also, Garrus' reading on Kaidan was just... on the spot. As expected from a sniper: a perfect headshot. One of the reasons I don't think Kaidan and Shepard make a good pair is simply the Hero-worship. That's also why I believe the ME1 cannon Garrus - the one who worships Shepard - isn't fit as a LI option. It's the change the character went through on those two years between Saren and the Collectors that makes this couple work for me.
I'm loving that you're putting that into words here.

A!A here - thanks so much for your comment!
Your feelings regarding ME1 Garrus mirror my own - which is one of the reasons the entire fic started. It's the confident ME3 garrus who, in my mind, suits Shepard so very well - and I think the game developers did a good job of showing in ME3 that he is, indeed, her rock. Hell, even awkward ME2 Garrus, adorable as he is, really doesn't fit the bill for me.
Despite all of that, one of the reasons I think that there is so much Garrus love in general is because he is the one character who truly evolves internally during the series.
Glad you're enjoying this. I hope I don't have to make you guys wait THAT long again between updates!

Shepard took a few deep breaths and counted to ten. She’d learned quite a few exercises during anger management therapy. The alliance had forced her to take the courses, and she grudgingly admitted they had helped some. She had always had a rather short fuse. And she was using the techniques regularly with one of her crew members in particular

At least the turian didn’t seem to consider her one. In fact, the arrogant bastard could use a bit more deference. Though she did in fact appreciate his blunt honesty, even if it made her want to deck him at times. She grudgingly admitted to herself that she had to respect him for having the balls to stand up to her and say precisely what was on his mind. Few people did

I'm so glad you're still working on this, author-anon! It's so interesting to see such a neck-breakingly different dynamic between these two, one based on mutual antagonism rather than friendship and unconditional support. Even just observing the differences in Garrus' behavior is fascinating, considering standing up to Shepard and even defying her is something he never would have done in his original incarnation on the SR1.
