Interesting what story ideas are possible... Sounds like a complete novel hidden here, and it even hasn't to really be an AU...
Maybe someone could imagine some scenes or glimpses of these events? (aka seconding)

...okay. I have something like this that I've been waiting to post on A03 because I wrote it as a sequel to the fic I'm currently struggling through. But I'm tired of seeing it just sitting there in my finished drafts folder, so here is an excerpt that is relevant to this prompt. AU plotline, where Garrus works with Aria. Set after ME1, with implied past Femshep/Garrus.
