It is also possible to replace the pawns with checkers. They would move just as they would in their native game: diagonal movement, taking multiple pieces, and of course the "kinging" piece exchange in place of the "queening" of pawns. This means that a player can have multiple kings, each of which must be taken for check-mate.

I love that the checkers take their 'power' with them when this is done, as though their movement is a factor of the pieces themselves, and not just the rules of the game. (Like, that could have just as easily said "It is also possible to make the pawns move like checkers do in the game of checkers", but it didn't; you need to bring the checkers with you to get a piece that moves that way. :D)

Pawns would be rather useless in a game of checkers, I think. You must bear in mind that the red squares are lava, after all.

Y'know, until you pointed that out, it never occurred to me that half the squares on a checkerboard are never used.. I guess I thought one team used one set and the other team used the other, but that wouldn't work for diagonal jumping.. huh XD

Has anyone ever built a checkerboard where the unused squares are literally holes in the board?

Ahh, yes, ghost checkers, when one or more of them are moving in the lava. It occurs to me that there is the distinct possibility of four-person checkers, with red, blue, black and white armies. When kinged, the checkers would find themselves with the ability to take pieces via lateral jumping. Their victims would find themselves under assault from dimensions previously unthoughtful; a hopeless battle with foes from beyond the veil.

That would be a fun and novel board. That is until some hapless checker falls into one of the holes. That would be a regular problem, I imagine.
