Because there are new people, and I never did one, I figured I'd write it up, Jonathan, for those that don't know, or those that do, or those that just want to make sure what they know is what everyone else knows... wait, huh?
Background
Jonathan Crane was born the only son of Stephen and Rebecca Crane, a young, moderately wealthy couple who died tragically in a car accident when he was still very young. His paternal grandmother, Dorthea Elizabeth Crane, was bestowed guardianship of Jonathan a short time later as she was his next of kin. Dorthea however, never wanted to have to raise her son’s, in her eyes, illegitimate son.
A strict Episcopalian, she didn’t believe that her son’s marriage to a Jew was in any way recognized in the eyes of god. Feeling that his illegitimacy was the devil’s pathway into his soul, Dorthea resolved to get the devil out of him. Strict attendance to church, as well as being made to read aloud from the Bible for hours every day was only the first step. She also believed in strict punishment. For even the
smallest of improprieties or instances of bad behavior she would
lock him in the aviary for
birds to attack him.
Shortly after Jonathan’s sixteenth birthday, he grew tired of living under her thumb and seizing upon an opportunity, pushed her down the stairs (a fact known only by Crowley). His mother’s lawyer felt that in her infirm state, it would be best if Jonathan were sent to boarding school. At Fandom High, Jonathan made friends for the first time in his life. These included The Junior Achievers (Angelus, Belthazor, Faith and Draco), Medusa and Crowley. He also maintained a position as a counselor at the school clinic.
At he end of Winter Term however he’s forced to return home, having received a
letter from his grandmother informing him of her impending death and subsequent termination of his enrollment at Fandom High. He puts up with her demands and recriminations for over a year. During which time he enjoyed a larger degree of freedom than ever before.
With each passing month, Jonathan began to enjoy his freedom more and more and an idea began forming in his head. Having made the decision to test out of high school, Jonathan waits for the confirmation of having passed the test before putting his plan into action. Within days of receiving notice of her passing, Jonathan kills her in her sleep. (The official report lists it as having been from natural causes. Only Crowley knows what really happened, though Phale and by extension possibly Wilson suspect) He expects to inherit her small fortune, as he is her only living relative and heir, but her will contains a clause stating that Jonathan must obtain a college degree before he’s able to inherit. A small trust pays for his books and tuition and a monthly stipend will see that he will neither starve nor go homeless, but it’s hardly the fortune he’d been hoping for.
Description
Jonathan is an exceptionally
pretty young man. High cheekbones and bright blue eyes, his soft manner and slight build make him look very effeminate. Jonathan is aware of this, and odds are, he’s using it against you. He needs glasses to read and see long distances. If you see him at work or in school you will most likely see him in his glasses, long sleeved button-up shirts, slacks and possibly a jacket and tie. If he’s at play, he’s likely wearing tight jeans and a tight t-shit… or less. Jonathan has dark brown hair that he keeps at a medium-short length and parts in the middle.
Abilities, Powers, etc.
Jonathan has no superpowers or magical abilities inherent to himself. The only kind of magical ability he does have is an odegra. The
odegra (specifics to come later) has two side effects. The first is an encouragement of Jonathan’s natural dark impules. The second prevents telepaths, precognitives and empaths from being able to read his mind. This second ability is by no means bullet proof. It’s a minor shielding and if you think your pup can break through it please feel free to email me. For instance, Phoebe is a powerful empath and has a tie to Jonathan through Crowley and as such her empathy can read Jonathan’s emotions.
In addition to that Jonathan is highly intelligent. His areas of interest are chemistry, biology and psychology. He’s developing a fear toxin that, when inhaled, causes the victim to hallucinate their worst fears. It’s been successfully tested and he is now fine tuning.
Jonathan abhors violence in most cases. He sees it as low brow and common, the tool of the uncivilized. Furthermore, he uses words as both a weapon and a shield. A shield to deflect questions and conversations back onto those he’s talking to and as a weapon against those that antagonize him. He has a quick wit and a sharp tongue and isn’t afraid to use them against anyone.
Personality
This is the longest section for a reason. Jonathan’s personality is heavily nuanced and difficult to explain because deep down, he’s a mass of contradictions.
Jonathan the doctor, Jonathan the party boy
While presenting himself as Jonathan Crane, doctor to be and good student, Jonathan is polite; proper manners having been drilled into him by his grandmother. He sees rudeness as a mark of incivility and is unlikely to forget or forgive some one that is rude to him. He’s very protective of his personal space, believing it to be rude for others to stand very near or to touch him unless they have permission. Shy and bookish, he presents a very wholesome picture; some one you’d want your daughter to date, or your mother to be close friends with.
When he is out on the prowl, looking to hook up with a stranger (and it’s almost always strangers for Jonathan) he’s more confident. He has no problem with touching and being close in this instance, invading others personal space and using the good looks he knows he has in order to entice some one into his bed. If his prey is more delicate in nature, he’ll use the shy act, smile and blush; but remember that it is only an act.
Jonathan and women
Women like Jonathan. On top of his being attractive and his manner and way of speaking making him seem safe, he’s also some one they feel they can talk to. Most women want a man that will listen to them and care about them and their problems. Jonathan, being a trained psychiatrist, is excellent at this; able to listen and offer advice, or just a reassuring shoulder to cry on. He also believe in women’s rights and sexual freedom and equality, having stated many times that double standards regarding women and sex are wrong.
Despite this, Jonathan remains a misogynist, believing that women make little sense and are of very little consequence. It’s one of the reasons why he sees mostly female patients. He has no problems being in a position of power over them because he believes he’s intellectually superior to them. He’s unlikely to share this point of view with you, no matter who you are, because he understands that social niceties don’t allow for it. Paying attention though, you might notice it.
There are a select few women who’ve managed to get past this. Women Jonathan respects despite himself. Women like this are a curiosity to him, but he values their friendship even more because of this. (Faith, Duce, Phoebe and Tara, though for Tara see below)
Jonathan and relationships
Jonathan might like you, might spend lots of time with you, might even fuck you, but he doesn’t love you. He is in fact incapable of love. As a sociopath,
his brain works differently than most people and as a result, he’s incapable for feeling emotions that deeply. He does make friends though, and it’s possible you’ve managed to surprise him by becoming some one he cares for.
Tara
Tara deserves a special section because she is neither friend nor lover, she is ‘Other’. Jonathan met Tara when she came in for counseling during his time as psychiatrist at FandomHigh. He didn’t think much of her at first, but as their sessions continued, he began to see something inside of Tara, a strength of will curled tight around some of the most profound, deep fear he’s ever encountered. In what was arguably one of the greatest nights of his life, Crowley fed
(literally) Jonathan Tara’s fear and Jonathan has been hooked ever since.
He asked Angelus (his first friend and then head of the Junior Achievers Club(or Club Evil)) if he could have her as his special project for the year and Angelus happily said she was all his. He later asked Crowley the same thing, and Crowley also indicated that she was all Jonathan’s. Tara’s behavior towards Jonathan is completely deferential, she’ll listen to him and in most cases, do exactly as he asks or suggests. Jonathan has taken this as a sign of her also giving herself to him.
Jonathan has never had, nor wanted anything that was completely his and so, Tara is something completely unique to him. His deep obsession (obsession being one of the strongest emotions he’s capable of) with Tara is a completely new feeling for him. He wants to protect her from others, if only because he sees breaking Tara open as his own pleasure. It’s why he loves their counseling sessions, because he gets to break her open, just a little and look at the fear inside of her, raw and complete.
To Jonathan, Tara is not really a woman, because women are inferior and Tara is not inferior. His feelings for her are completely non-sexual (see above re: not a woman). She is the most beautiful person he knows, at least to him. Something to be held up as an example, studied, cherished. The closest Jonathan will ever come to falling in love with anyone, is his obsession with Tara. It’s completely chaste, but she provides for him an endless subject to study, something completely (in his eyes) his and some one who’s pain is beautiful to see. Don’t get between Jonathan and Tara, he doesn’t like it.
Crowley
Jonathan feels complete and utter devotion to Crowley. He was raised an Episcopalian, the word of God practically shoved down his throat, but he never believed in God until the day he met Crowley. He knows Crowley isn’t God, recognizes that he is a demon, but that doesn’t change the fact that he accepts Crowley as a kind of personal divinity.
With Crowley, there is always a choice and Jonathan made his choice, choosing to give himself freely and completely to Crowley. He was
marked (link NSFW) for his choice, marked as Crowley’s, property and devotee. To clarify, Jonathan was going to Fall, what little Grace he had he would certainly lose, all on his own, but now, he’s dedicating it to Crowley. Any and all of his accomplishments as he turns away from the light are credits to Crowley, in his own opinion. Everything he does, dedicated to Crowley and what he’s done for him.
Crowley and Jonathan have had a physical relationship in the past, so Jonathan does see Crowley in a sexual way as well as in the devotional way. But for Jonathan, the sexual aspect of his and Crowley’s relationship is a manifestation of how close he feels to the demon. It is Crowley’s decision whether they continue it, as it is Crowley’s decision whether he continues his relationship at all. Whatever Crowley wants to give Jonathan, is exactly what Jonathan thinks he deserves, his devotion runs that deep. If Jonathan were capable of love, Crowley would be that which he loved most. The most beautiful and perfect creature in all of existence.
Jonathan and sex
Jonathan likes sex, he likes it a lot. He’s bisexual, liking women and men equally, though lately has been with more men than women. He can have sex almost any way, but seeing as he’s a born submissive, prefers to be with a dominant. Which brings us to…
Jonathan the masochist, Jonathan the sadist
Yes he’s both, no not at the same time.
Jonathan is a sexual masochist. He prefers to be
hurt or
scared during sex. (Links NSFW) He can have sex without either of these two things being present, but if he’s given a choice, he prefers for his partner to try and hurt him or frighten him. In regards to pain, Jonathan can actually stand a lot in the name of sex, Crowley tries hard to be careful with him, but has caused a great deal of damage in the past. This was of course, healed almost immediately, but in no did this adversely affect his enjoyment of the sexual act. As far as being scared goes, he’s been turned on in the past by the suggestion that he might be forced, so again, he’s got a very high tolerance for what he’ll take as far as being scared.
Jonathan is an emotional sadist, he’s fascinated and exhilarated by other people’s fear. It’s one reason why his fear toxin is so much fun for him, seeing others in agony and fear gives him pleasure. He doesn’t have a conscience (again, sociopath) and as such doesn’t see a problem with liking others being in pain or agony. He won’t share this viewpoint with you though, because he knows it’s not a proper thing to share.
To make clear, Jonathan doesn’t derive sexual pleasure from other people’s fear. His reaction to the pain and agony of others is completely emotional and non-sexual in nature. Fascination, curiosity and happiness are his reactions to other’s pain and fear. It is only his own fear and pain that Jonathan gets off on.
And that’s Jonathan, in a nutshell; a four page long nutshell. Look it’s a shell for big nuts. Or a big nut, whichever way you'd prefer to interpret it as.
