I felt exactly the same way about the film. The experience of LotR films was all about the unfolding epic, the vast scope and the intricate details, and the sheer size of the whole thing. This film, epic though it may be, is self-contained and not overwhelming; it was more successful as entertainment, if that makes any sense. Don't misunderstand me, I appreciate and love LotR and always will, but this movie was more of a treat. The White Witch (the highlight of the whole thing, really :p), for example, is a character of equal strength, effectiveness, and pitch-perfection as McKellan's Gandalf, but she isn't stretched over nearly twelve hours of film. It's all more palatable, I suppose.
