That's a shabby way to treat software engineers, and I'm sorry to hear you lost your job. I'm curious as to what the rationale is behind the law. It seems unfair to single out programmers. Usually when you get down to the bottom of it, someone stands to profit from the legislation... but sometimes, a law intended to protect people can backfire.
I'm trying to envision a scenario like that... like maybe programmers somewhere wanted escape clauses because they were being strongarmed into signing contracts due to NDAs/trade secrets and were not given promotions or raises because, hey, they are already locked up under contract. Honestly, I don't know, though the origins could probably be unearthed on the internet easily enough.
