The trip to the resort gave Minjung plenty of time to consider whether or not it had really been a good idea to go while Gwiboon worried over leaving her make-up bag. She made sure to blame it on having to drag Minjung out to the cab. Minjung easily found the hole in her logic, because Gwiboon had forgotten it at her apartment long before she'd ever been dragging Minjung anywhere. Then there was Eunsook, sitting in the seat behind her. She had one earbud in and kept singing random lines of various songs from her Ipod. Minjung smiled somewhat apologetically to the man trying to sleep in front of them and felt the desire to sink into the chair. How was any of this supposed to make her feel better?
At the same time though, she appreciated her friend's concern. Usually she would feel excited to go on vacation, especially to a ski resort, but right now things were a little difficult. Right now her life just hadn’t been going that well. Sucking up her complaints, Minjung tilted her head back and closed her eyes. Eventually Gwiboon stopped talking and she got a few minutes of sleep before they arrived at their destination.
The resort was nice, Minjung realized, as they stepped out of the cab that took them the rest of the way the plane couldn't. There was a log cabin office, and behind it they could see several other cabins stretching back into the mountain. From there, Minjung could see the lift going higher into the mountain too.
Suddenly Gwiboon was shivering next to her and urging them all forward. "Come on, we can look at it later. It's too cold out here to stand around."
Minjung found it amusing because they had come there to be outside, but she followed Gwiboon's request regardless of that thought. Once checked in, the three girls trudged up the path out back to their cabin. "I can't believe none of the guys sitting around in there offered to help three girls carry their bags. Worthless," Gwiboon grumbled.
"They were working," Eunsook pointed out, but Gwiboon only sent her a glare as they continued.
They all thanked their luck when they reached their cabin, not the furthest away, but far enough that they were all cold and tired of carrying their luggage.
"Heat," Gwiboon gasped in ecstasy as she stumbled in the front door.
"Wow," Eunsook breathed as they walked further in. Minjung also felt her eyes drinking in the sight. It was so cozy and comfortable looking.
"I might just never leave this cabin," Gwiboon said with an amused laugh, while she still shivered and headed right for the fireplace. Minjung went straight to finding a room, while the other two fiddled with getting the gas going and the fire started.
Later, Gwiboon found Minjung stretched out across her bed. "Hey, Eunsook made some hot chocolate. Well, Eunsook tried and I had to fix it up after, but it tastes good. Come out and have some, okay?"
Minjung gave her a smile and nodded. "I'll be out in a second."
The shorter girl nodded her head in understanding before turning and shuffling back into the living room, snuggling up on the couch with a soft blanket beside Eunsook.
"Is she coming?"
"In a minute," Gwiboon replied confidently. Minjung wouldn't lie, and she thought the taller girl would try her best to make the trip good for all of them. "In the meantime," she suddenly added with a sly smile, "tell me how things are going with that guy in your vocals class."
"Oh," Eunsook blushed and looked like she'd found something really interesting in her hot chocolate. "Well, I don't know if we'll have any more classes together anyway..."
"What guy?" came Minjung's booming voice from the other side of the couch, making Gwiboon nearly jump out of her skin. She quickly recovered though and scooted over to give Minjung room to sit between them. Eunsook gestured toward the mug on the coffee table and Minjung took it with a quiet thanks.
"Eunsook has a crush on some hot guy with an amazing voice," Gwiboon chirped in as Minjung sipped the cocoa and Eunsook blushed like crazy.
"No, I don't. I mean, it's not a crush or anything," she hurried to explain, sounding flustered. "We just get along well, and he asked me to sing with him when I get back. It's nothing serious, really."
A sort of awkward silence fell as everyone remembered just why Minjung needed a vacation so badly. No one could forget how miserable Minjung had been a week before when things had ended with her long term boyfriend. They both knew it was still taking its toll on her, and they wanted to make it even a little better for her. Gwiboon coughed to cover up the silence and mentally grasped at any idea for a change in topic. "So, I guess we'll be skiing tomorrow."
"I didn't think it would feel so cold," Gwiboon shivered as she clutched onto the sticks while the three were being hoisted up the mountain by a cable car.
Minjung laughed and shook her head. "Yeah, imagine that, up here in the mountains, at a ski resort. Who would have thought it would be so cold?"
Gwiboon glowered at her for a moment before sighing. "I knew it would be cold, I just didn't know it would feel so cold," she shot back stubbornly, like there was a difference.
Once out on the snow, the three reacted to it very differently. Minjung was waiting and watching while Gwiboon started moving around, testing out the gear and trying to get a feel for it so she didn't look like a complete idiot. Eunsook was picking herself up and dusting off the snow from where she'd already fallen down.
Even though it would have been mean to do it to someone she didn't know, and maybe even was a little mean still to do it to Eunsook, Gwiboon couldn't help but laugh loudly as the girl fell down over and over. "You really have no gracefulness, Eunsook," she said through her giggles, thoughts of the cold momentarily forgotten.
After several failed attempts, Eunsook started off down the hill, slowly though, as she kept falling back onto her butt. Gwiboon laughed loudly, but the distraction was enough to make her lose her own balance and she ended up falling face first into the snow. Sputtering, she pulled herself up, her face stinging coldly.
Minjung swiftly flew by her, and Gwiboon felt a pang of envy at not only her friend's ease with sports, but also the lack of snow on her clothing. Gwiboon could feel it sliding down into the neck of her shirt, and she shivered in discomfort. Minjung looked back and smiled. Gwiboon could see the laughter in her eyes. A few feet away, Eunsook laughed from her own spot on the ground. "Let's just take this first hill slow, yeah?" she suggested and Gwiboon only frowned in response before pulling herself to her feet.
After several hills, Eunsook had never managed to stand for more than ten minutes on the slopes. They had made two trips into the cabin to heat up between runs, and after all was done, the three girls were famished. Luckily the main office had a nice restaurant and delivery, weather permitted, so they thought they would be safe enough not to get too hungry. Plus, they had brought some of their own provisions. The three decided to eat at the restaurant that evening, and after filling themselves up, they walked back to the cabin, talking louder and feeling warmer despite the temperature dropping with the hour.
Once inside, they came up with the great idea of camping out in the living room. "I used to do things like this when I was younger," Gwiboon mentioned wistfully as they laid out the blankets and pillows on the floor.
"I did too, but we'd just throw some blankets out on the floor and pass out when we got tired," Eunsook said with a laugh.
"I used to build forts in my living room. We'd use chairs and the couch and tables. It was like our own mini house, or tent I guess," Minjung added to the stories, and the other two looked at her with shining eyes. "What?"
"Let's do it," Gwiboon said a little breathlessly.
"Do what?"
"Build a fort!" Eunsook called excitedly, rushing back to the rooms to grab more material. Gwiboon nodded enthusiastically and started resituating the furniture.
"Come on, Minjung, you're the expert in this."
Smiling, despite thinking it was kind of silly, Minjung stood and helped move things around so that with the right draping of sheets, they ended up with a nice, roomy tent.
"So comfy," Eunsook noted contently as she rolled into her blanket. Gwiboon shook her head, thinking that despite how cool it was, she could still feel the floor under he butt.
"It's warm at least," she said snuggling into her pillow as she held it closely in her lap.
"I wish we could stay longer," Eunsook said slowly, thinking about how they only had another day there. It would have been nice to go for a week or something, but they all had other things to do for Christmas, families and other people to spend time with.
"At least we get this much time together," Gwiboon said, reaching over to ruffle Eunsook's hair, earning her a cheeky smile.
Suddenly a pillow hit her in the side, and Gwiboon stared in open mouth surprise at the coyly smirking Minjung. "Come on. No whining. We have to enjoy the rest of our time here, right? You guys dragged me here, so you better!"
A slow smile spread across the mouths of the other two. Gwiboon's hands tightened around her pillow, her body tensed and ready. "Riiight," she responded slowly. The atmosphere in the room changed and Eunsook sat up and clutched her own pillow.
There was a long moment of silence and hesitation before Eunsook made the first move, pillow flying toward Gwiboon, making her screech and throw her own pillow up in defense. Minjung laughed and assaulted her from the other side.
Pillows were flying as the girls laughed and grabbed anything in sight to aid in their battle. By the time they collapsed on the floor, they were all breathing heavy and the tent was halfway collapsed. Minjung moved to fix it, but Gwiboon pulled her back down into the mess of covers. "Leave it. Let's just pass out now," she added, grinning at Eunsook.
Even though they'd had three days and two nights at the lodge, it felt like only hours had passed since they'd arrived. The three waited for the cab to arrive, no one quite ready to return. After a few minutes, Eunsook went to buy herself a drink. Minjung scooted a little closer to Gwiboon and reached an arm around her, pulling her into a awkward hug that surprised the shorter girl.
"Thank you, for making me come with you guys," she said quietly.
Gwiboon felt her cheeks flush, but she couldn't help but smile widely through her embarrassment. After a second she pulled back and scoffed. "Well, of course. It's not like it was bad for me anyway. Who wouldn't want to come on vacation here?"
She snuck a look at Minjung who just smiled at her knowingly. "I feel a lot better," the tall girl confirmed before she could even be asked.
"You better," Gwiboon mumbled, still flustered by the sudden show of affection from her friend. Minjung only smiled more and patted her head softly.
"Just think, it will actually feel kind of warm back home after being up here."
Gwiboon couldn't help but smile, both in amusement at her own complaints of the cold, but also at the actual happiness she felt at the thought. "Well, that's true. See, this vacation was worth it after all."
"I'm glad it was," Eunsook said as she slid into the seat on the other side of Minjung, handing them both steaming cups of coffee. "Plus, I learned how to ski. Don't forget that."
The other two stared at her for a long moment before bursting into laughter, having to take care not to spill the hot coffee as they stifled their giggles. The trip had most definitely been worth it, for all of them, even if Eunsook hadn’t actually picked up on skiing.
