Fred had always been particularly sensitive to things when Ron was involved. He’d been worried continuously, though few knew it, when his younger brother’s friendship with one Boy Who Lived caused an over abundance of danger and harm. But leave it to Ron to befriend the reckless.
Which was why it was no real surprise to himself when, upon some self discovery, he realized he was in love with the now 17 year old.
Naturally there was no way to tell Ron. But he stood beside him and clutched his hand as the war unfolded. And when one particularly nasty Malfoy shot an Unforgivable their way, Fred covered him.
It cost him his life.
It was only years later, when the world was as normal as it ever was in the Wizarding community and Ron was happily married to Hermione with two children the truth came out.
A letter, hidden under the floorboards of the Weasley twin’s room - found by sheer accident and addressed to Ron told the truth.
Ron could not change the way things had ended but he told his brother silently every night that he loved him just the same.
