most people mistake independent cinema to be a matter of quality or taste. when people claim to champion independent cinema, what many are actually doing is to rally for their personal taste. the fact is, authorities in charge of giving grant money are not very different from executive heads of commercial studios. each of them are merely upholding ( Read more... )

I decided to finally read a long post without pictures. And I'm glad I did. This post of yours is one of the most honest and sensible commentary I've read in a while (since I don't have much attention span). Thank you. I've been wondering what is wrong with this country's film industry for a while now. And my puny brain couldn't come up with anything. Humility is a good place to start.

hope you're doing well, Jade.

what the philippine film industry needs is humility. erpz May 21 2008, 05:30:43 UTC

Palanca Awards.

what it also needs is real film criticism, written by people with no vested interest in promotion. problem is, Filipinos are diplomatic by culture; they'd rather shut up than give honest opinion that has the potential of offending someone, especially if that someone works within the same sphere of influence as the sayer. real film criticism here appears to be dead; probably for lack of avenues of communication, or the perceived lack of respect such practitioners would receive from the filmmakers themselves, or maybe even the supposition that those who could write real criticism end up wanting to be in production themselves. i dunno. just mouthing off on my pet theories here ( ... )

ang sarap pagdebatehan nito ah. lol

actual comment: i hope you continue this kind of mindset cos this is something you can't teach people, which makes it all the more sadder.

another out-of-topic comment: i saw your spread on fudge magazine. that's one huge head photo, man. XD
