Chapter 5:
Ohno rubbed his eyes, feeling extremely sleep deprived. After Jun had dropped him off at his studio, telling him to get some rest, Ohno could not help but disobey Jun and ended up painting all night along, stuffing spoonful after spoonful of the cha-han he cooked for Nino into his mouth.
Thinking about eating that whole pot of cha-han, Ohno suddenly felt sick to the stomach. Hopefully he would vomit everything out and be excused from the interview. Ohno shifted himself on the television studio sofa so that he was lying sidewards.
Jun had told him the day before about appearing on a show titled ‘Hey Hey Hey’. He really wished he had declined. Even though Jun would be there with him, Ohno was still feeling very nervous.
Ohno squirmed. Feeling extremely fidgety, Ohno reached out to the coffee table in front of him and picked a magazine at random from the pile atop the table.
What he saw on the magazine cover was equivalent to being struck by lightning.
Ohno felt a jolt of electricity running through his body as he flipped the ‘Myojo’ to the desired page. There, on page 23, read ‘Exclusive interview with Ninomiya Kazunari’ in a big, bright and bold font. Ohno beamed from ear to ear, glad that he had a chance to get to know Nino and began reading.
Ohno now knew why most people died after being struck by lightning. He had skipped the first few paragraphs talking about Nino’s concert, and went straight to the section titled ‘Ninomiya’s love life’. When Ohno read the first sentence of ‘the 27-year old famous pianist is still single, still waiting for his perfect someone’, Ohno’s heart skipped a beat or two. But he really wished he had just stopped there.
Jun was right after all.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
“Sho?” Nino called out for his friend, walking towards the sound of Sho typing furiously on his laptop, “Are you free?”
Nino heard the annihilation of buttons stop, “what’s up?” asked Sho. Nino felt Sho’s hand hold his as Sho led him to a chair beside his study table.
“Can you teach me how to write? As in more complicated words,” asked Nino, giving Sho the best smile he could muster.
Sho let out a chuckle as ruffling of paper could be heard.
Sho used to teach him how to write when they were younger. They would be sitting on the same chair at Sho’s study table, and Sho would hold onto his hand and trace the word, allowing Nino to get a feel of it. But now that they are older, and of course, much bigger, it was really impossible for them to sit on the same chair.
Which resulted in…
“Ouch!” cried Sho, as he fell off the right side of the chair.
“Sho-chan!”
Sho smiled sheepishly as Nino rushed to help Sho off the floor. However, in his haste and not being able to see where he was going, Nino tripped over Sho’s laptop case and fell.
Right on top of Sho.
Sho froze. This is the kind of situation he had been waiting for for a long time. He had played different scenarios about him confessing to Nino, and this was one of them. But when the time came, his body just had to stupidly turn numb.
Nino let out a nervous laugh as he got off Sho. Being the gentleman that he is, Sho scrambled up and assisted Nino in getting on his feet.
Once they were up, Sho purposely ignored the other chair beside his table and pulled Nino towards him, making Nino sit on his lap. With his left arm securely around Nino’s slim waist, Sho placed a pen in Nino’s hand and began writing a somewhat difficult character.
As each second flew past, Sho was subconsciously leaned closer and closer to Nino, until his chin was resting on Nino’s shoulder.
“Sho, have do I write ‘field’ (the ‘no’ in ‘Ohno’)?” asked Nino out of the blue, hoping Sho would not notice where he was heading.
But, the Keio Graduate was smart, and knew Nino long enough, to figure out what he was up to.
“Ah!” cried Sho, “Nino, someone’s calling me,” lied Sho, placing his hands on Nino’s hips in a way that told Nino to get off him.
“But your phone isn’t ringing,” retaliated Nino
“It’s on silent mode,”
Nino heard Sho’s footsteps getting further and further away from him, and pouted. He had no idea why Sho would walk off suddenly like that, he was pretty sure nobody was calling him, and Sho never lied to him. Even if Sho figured out why he wanted to know how to write, why would he refuse?
Nino grumbled in frustration as he walked back to his room. With Sho not wanting to teach him, Nino had nothing better to do, he was sick of playing the piano, sick of playing the guitar, sick of not being able to see. So, without knowing what he was doing, Nino walked up to the TV in his room, exactly five steps to the right from the door at switched it on.
He rarely ‘watched’ the television for obvious reasons, but this time, he was seriously bored.
A round of applause erupted from the TV, as the opening theme of the show ‘Hey Hey Hey’, a show he himself had been on before, played. Nino sat himself comfortably on the sofa, wondering who the guest on today’s episode was.
“Today, we’re having a very special guest,” said the host, after the song ended, “he’s the famous painter, Ohno Satoshi!”
Nino felt his heart leap. He could not believe his good fortune! After not being able to meet Ohno for quite sometime, he finally got to, in a way, see him again.
The first part of the show talked about Ohno’s exhibitions, and how they were a success, having drawn all sorts of important people from all over the world.
Then, the exciting part of the show came.
“So, Ohno-san,” giggled the host, “Are you single?”
Nino started squirming in his seat, waiting for Ohno’s response. The time period between the question and Ohno’s answer took even longer than usual. He knew Matsumoto would have to translate the question, and sometime for Ohno to think, but this was seriously taking longer than the other questions.
“Yes,” Ohno’s answer finally came, “I’m still waiting,”
Nino grinned.
“So, what kind of girls to you like?” asked the host, almost too lustily.
Pause.
“Someone who could appreciate my paintings,” replied Ohno simply.
Ohno’s words rang in Nino’s ears, repeating itself again and again and again, mocking his very existence, while a single tear made its way down Nino’s pale face.

The hosts of the show thanked him profusely as Ohno exited the set with Jun beside him. Ohno sighed in relief, glad the show was finally over.
“Well done, Satoshi,” commented Jun, flashing him a smile as they both made their way to Jun’s car.
Ohno nodded, not realizing what Jun actually meant.
Watching Ohno walk with his back hunched in a way which Jun knew meant that Ohno was disappointed, Jun smirked. He pulled that month’s issue of ‘Myojo’ from his pack pocket and flipped to page 23.
He was not surprise that Sho kept his side of the deal.
A few days before, Jun had sent Sho a message, telling him to make it look like Nino did not like Ohno, while he would do the same with Ohno.
Jun’s eyes finally found what they were looking for, the paragraph titled ‘Ninomiya’s love life’. ‘The 27-year old famous pianist is still single, still waiting for his perfect someone’, he read, ‘but he would like someone who could enjoy his music’.
That was all Jun needed to read.
