Chapter 1:
Tonight is a crappy night. No. The crappiest of all crappy nights. I just had to leave my umbrella at the shop.
I now found myself attempting to use my non-water-proof jacket as a makeshift shelter, but, seriously, who am I kidding?
“Nino!” I heard a familiar voice yell my name. It’s Aiba. Aiba and I have been friends for years. We had met each other in pre-school and have been best buddies ever since, which I find quite surprising, considering our polar opposite personalities.
“Nino!” Aiba yelled again, “I see a cab! Flag it! Quick!”
I looked towards the direction he was pointing at. True enough I saw an available cab.
“Finally,” I sighed. I could finally get out of this rain. I could finally get home and have a nice hot shower. I could - oh shit! Is that cab turning?
“No!” I yelled, frantically waving my arms, hoping the driver could see me, “Over here!”
The cab did not seem to be changing its direction. But, I just had to get that cab. I dashed towards it, not caring if the chances of slipping and falling were high, due to my dumb rubber soled shoes.
It wasn’t my fault I had such crappy shoes, I was nearly bankrupt! And my previous shoes just had to break. Actually, my life is totally crap! My parents just had to divorce, my boyfriend, Ohno, had to break up with me.
My job sucks. My pay sucks. My wardrobe sucks. Overall, my life sucks.
Getting this cab was one way to make my life better. I just had to get that cab.
“TAXI!!! TAXI!!!”, yelling myself hoarse.
I dashed along the pavement, leaping over puddles, surprised that my short legs were able to run that fast.
But my day just had to get worse.
My eyes, which were busy focusing on the cab, did not see the flight of steps just centimeters ahead. Hence, they did not warn my brain about the imminent danger, therefore, my legs did not get the message to stop running.
Falling down that flight of stairs felt like eternity. Or maybe longer.
I did register hitting my head, and other parts of my body, on the way down, but I just don’t seem to feel anything. Maybe it’s because my body is numb from the rain.
The bottom of the stairs seems to be becoming bigger. And bigger. Or was I just getting closer. But I didn’t have much time to thing about that, for the next thing I knew, everything went black.
