As requested by

Very simple tutorial. 6 steps. No selective coloring involved.
Made in PS CS, but I'm sure it can be translatable.

How to make these icons:

or
From this.

01. I cropped the image to 200x200px, I always work on this scale cos I find it easiest to get the image how I want it at this size. You can also see what your doing better than a smaller crop, and you can always resize to 100x100px once you are happy with it.

02. Next I duplicated the background layer and set it to screen, 100% opacity. You can always add more screen layers, or alter the opacity, depending on how bright/dark you want the image. I was happy with just one screen layer.

03. But this looks too bland. So next I added #CEB281 to color burn, fill: 33%. This should add more depth to the icon. Again, fiddle with the opacity/fill to get the icon how you want it.

04. I think this would be nice left as it is. However, I added a gradient map layer to get the black and white effect. To do this, go into: Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map. Then choose a black and white gradient and click OK.

Note: I would never recommend using the desaturation tool. It always comes out looking bland and boring.

05. This looked to bright to me, so I went into Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast.
Brightness: -20
Contrast:  +10

06. Now the image looks all right. Again you can fiddle with the brightness/contrast settings to get the image how you want it. I then resized it to 100 by 100px, and that's it!

.psd included.
