London's Burning: riots in Tottenham and Wood Green

Overnight, the events in north London have, simply, been horrifying to watch. As news unfolded on Twitter I began switching from BBC to Sky and back again trying to see if anyone, at all, knew what was going on. News reports are concentrating, naturally, on the riots themselves and the shooting that's supposedly sparked them ( Read more... )

What's interesting is the lack of news coverage. the american press has nothing at all about it and even the BBC website just has a small story at the bottom of their home page.

It is front lead on rolling coverage for BBC and Sky, the two main news channels, the BBC website can be a bit slow at frontpage updates weekend nights, etc.

Plus, at the moment, no one really knows what's happened, and at several points the BBC and Sky crews were pulled away, some press photgraphers had their equipment stolen and similar.

Hard to report something when you can't get to the scene, etc.

But yeah, I'd expect to see more, that's partially why I've written it in the way I have, if no bugger else is reporting it, I will, think I'm still aggregated to some news sites.

Guardian's got a live rolling blog on it, but nothing new.

If the 16-year-old girl story is true, then I change my mind about 90% of my post immediately :)

Guardian's blog appears to have confirmed the story is true, but she may have thrown somethign at them first.

One thrown stone and some shouting means being beaten to the ground by 15 armoured men with riot shields. FFS.

This is two miles east of where I live. What *isn't* being reported right now, is that the rioting spread west to Wood Green where the shopping centre and the high st have been systematically looted. I'll post when I know more.

More details over at Harringay Online where a few residents have posted pics/video footage. The looting in Wood Green has been pretty extensive.

Aye. There were so many people trying to loot J-D sports that they formed a queue:

Welcome to England, even the looters form queues...

Yeah, I heard reports of entire families out with shopping trolleys. Horrible business.

It's actually been blissfully quiet here in South Tottenham. I'd say even more so than usual! Probably because we don't have any shops...
