[x-posted to unusual_minds]

I noticed two things yesterday.

1) Chris and I were talking about music. He asserted that all metal is about Satanism, violence, and suicide, whereas I took the stance that the sound, not the topic range, defined metal and that it was possible for a metal song to be positive and upbeat. I cited a few of my favorite Nightwish songs ( Read more... )

You say your depression caused you to have all of these systems in your mind of explaining the world. What if you're getting the cause and effect backwards? You built systems of explaining the world because you thought it was a good idea, and you knew that doing so would make you a better person... and then you saw that most people don't do the same thing, which causes problems, and it made you sad? What if your sadness was for the lost potential of the human mind?

Nope, I've actually never failed to be impressed by humanity. I've always believed that every person (myself excluded) is a wonderous font of talent, utility, and beauty. And I was never "sad" - just static-y. I had to keep my brain constantly churning away on heavy topics in order to drown out the static.

not every person is wonderful and you often incorrectly aside that term to some very awful people and yet never recognized how wonderful you are. Sure you have problems. Lots of them. So do the rest of us. It is important not to make your problems someone else's problems as some people do

It's hard to find music that doesn't have any dark subtexts actually.

people tend to see what is inside of themselves in art. You noticing suicide if it was there or not back then and not seeing it now even when it is there is very indicative of this. It is disturbing (but not surprising) that Chris sees violence, suicide, and Satanism in everything.

I am very glad to know that you are getting better. Hopefully you will become truly better go off of the meds completely as I did. I am glad I was able to point out to you that your medication was disrupting you. Medication can be a good thing but not when it is more harmful than good as I believe yours is. Creativity is the reason I quite taking ADD meds and depression meds. I have been happy and creative for several years. I had a few months here of not being very happy but now I am both again. I would still be happier if Chris wasn't such a malicious mound of merda.

Also Chris is wrong about all metal being about those things. Some is in fact about living life and more is about sex.

Though I didn't know it at the time, my creativity was fueled by my mental illness.

I forgot that I used to be a member of that community. Reading my old posts has given me an acute case of embarrassment.

I bet you could find some Dream Theater songs (or something else in that subgenre) that aren't about death or violence.
