I couldn't agree with you more about crime and fear. Bad things happen everywhere and people fool themselves into thinking they're safe anywhere. I know people who are afraid to go to Minneapolis because of the crime. I knew people when I was young who wouldn't drive through North Minneapolis without locking their doors and rolling up their windows. That was the neighborhood I grew up in, biked around in, and got through just fine.

And as long as you're traveling in the industrialized world, you're definitely right that just about anywhere will be as safe as anywhere else. I think developing countries are a bit different. Some can be perfectly safe, others have guys with machine guns who hijack buses. But you're right about taking precautions and then taking your chances.

I'm afraid a lot of people who succumb to fear learn it from local news.

Oh, and this all reminds me of the dumb joke I heard: studies say over 90% of accidents happen with 5 miles of home, so I'm moving 10 miles away!
