BSG

Insomnia last night led me to watching the 2 part opening miniseries again.  Damn, that show was good in the beginning.  The first scene on the ship goes for almost 4 minutes in one long uninterrupted cut.  I loved Roslin/Adama from the first moment.  What can I say, I like power struggles ( Read more... )

That was their problem. They didn't know what they were good at. It was all about greed and jealousy. Not listening to the fans did them in, and it sounds like they have learned nothing from it.

Well, they keep working within their small little group. They desperately needed outside voices who weren't afraid of losing their jobs. In a normal world, someone would have said "uh, date rape isn't funny, guys" or "those 2 have zero romantic chemistry" or "we know you relate to McKay, but Sheppard is the star of the show." But their egos wouldn't be well served by dissent, so the product suffered.

It happens everywhere, though. I've seen all kinds of stupid ideas pushed through at work because the big boss wanted it and everyone was too afraid to say how stupid the idea was.

I <3 BSG, but it's hard to truly compare the two shows. They're quite different shows, with different objectives. Have you seen the deleted scene in Outsiders (?) where Ronon sees the start of BSG and tells John that "we gotta help these people"? I loved Bill/Laura too - I knew there was a shipper group for them but I couldn't understand what they were basing that on until about halfway through s2.

I think they could have pulled off more BSG-like eps, but they never really got over that teenage boy 'hey look at X doing this, it's so coooool' thing, so when they did something 'big' it didn't have the same effect (for me), and because the characters weren't as complex it never had the same effect (on me) when they did something darker.

As much as I dislike the SGA PTW at times, they were all good writers. I may not have agreed with their directions, but they were all capable of turning out good scripts when they tried. A pity they couldn't manage it every time though :(

Yeah, that's kinda my point in a way. They are good writers, but they should have stuck with doing what they were good at instead of trying to be something they aren't.

BSG is deep, dark, and complex. Stargate is more lighthearted, empty calories. But I like empty calories. (My waist size can attest to that)

You're right about the characters not being as deep in Stargate. Stargate's idea of back story was "Rodney has a sister" while BSG had character bibles. But I'm not saying one is good and one is bad. They're just different styles. While I'd say BSG is of a far better quality than Stargate, I don't rewatch it like I do Atlantis. It's the empty calorie thing.

Re: Bill/Laura. While it had a sad ending, it was sad in a good way not sad in a GitM way.
