when i was in high school i used to make sculpture forms (armatures?) out of tinfoil molded into 3-d shapes, then covered them with that gauze stuff that has plaster all in it. i forget what it's called, but most art stores should have it. it is a pretty good method if you are not particularly great at sculpture, plus if it cracks or anything you can just add another layer. then it's really easy to gesso & paint.
