The Tzedakah Project--August

Aug 12, 2005 16:03

I suppose I spoiled the surprise with the Tzedakah Challenge (juana17, you're awesome!), but in any case the August gift is traditional in the Nerd household. I did my annual contribution to the "Homeless Children's Trust;" yes, we have homeless people in Iowa (in fact, quite a lot, as people escape here from Chicago and Detroit because of the safety and the schools). It's so much fun to put the two big, heavy bags of school supplies into the "little red schoolhouse" container. I also sent a check to the Council of Religious Communities Back-to-School drive, which provides a new backpack full of supplies to needy kids in grades K-12 and organizes a "school clothes" drive.

This is a fun project simply because I like buying office supplies. I also went to an elementary school where not everyone was prepared for the new school year, either academically or materially. I like to imagine that school is like any other job...the right tools make it a lot more bearable. I hope I'm helping someone find it a little easier to get up for school in the morning.
