The Chinese Nightmare!

Ethan did well for his Chinese in term 1. In fact, he had an A. They did not have any CA and the teacher probably graded him based on his Chinese spelling and worksheets. The reason why he did well in term 1 was because it was mainly hanyupinyin which was something Ethan could cope with cos' he knows phonics and could blend sounds ( Read more... )

The sequence of the strokes will affect the final look of the characters, so make sure he gets it right. If you are unsure yourself, Popular sells this book that tells you the strokes for (I think) 1000 Chinese characters. Or invest in a Besta dictionary that gives the strokes illustration. Also, calligraphy may help, so you may want to explore the possibility of sending him for a class.

It is not the sequence of the strokes that is affecting him but rather the placement of the strokes - something to do with his poor visual skills or just pure laziness.

I tried asking a school near by about the calligraphy class but they refused to accept him - said something that he's too young. I too feel that perhaps calligraphy can help him.

Even Dominic is taking calligraphy class in school, so how can Ethan be too young to start? His calligraphy teach is Mr Kong Ling Guang. Hp : 94591019. I am quite sure he gives pte lessons too.

Thanks for the contact. With him being in the afternoon session, we hardly have time for anymore lessons. If the teacher is available and his rates are affordable, I will probably arrange something during the June holidays.

Lena, take it easy. Ethan is doing well. Xander's handwriting is still very bad and he loses lost of marks in Maths especially because of his atrocious handwriting. Something which we can only remind.

Its good that his teacher knows that he revises his work. Give him some time. I tell myself as long as Xander passes his papers, I'll be happy. Anything else is a bonus.

I'm not even sure if Ethan will pass his papers! He takes so long to complete his Maths homework at home. Sometimes he does not even understand what is required in the question. Super stressed about the upcoming SA.

Gosh. We're toast when Stephen starts P1 in January. He knows no Chinese! We're moving to Singapore in July so I guess I have a few months for him to catch up but... we'll have to work pretty darn hard. :(

You can send him to Chinese enrichment classes. The centre that Ethan goes to has foreigners children attending the class and they are so good in it.
