31_days Fic: Sequel to yesterday's offering

Aug 29, 2009 22:34

So far so good: I'm planning to rewatch the series soon, the better to work on the first half of the stories I have planned.

Title: "Sea of Rebirth"
Day/Theme: August 29) all my innocence is wasted on the dead and dreaming
Series: Neon Genesis Evangelion ("The Grigori Continuum")
Character/Pairing: Kozo Fuyutsuki
Rating: PG-13 (subject matter)

Author's Notes: Another fragment of the second or third part of the ambitious NGE project I've undertaken. This takes place a day or two after the piece I posted yesterday. A more introspective piece this time, and a little more development of the post-End of Evangelion world (yes, I am capable of writing my characters in upright positions with their clothes *on*).

Reddish orange fluid lapped at the narrow shoreline. Sabia walked several paces ahead of him, giving him space to think and to meditate as the both of them kept watch; he walked slower than she, caught for the moment in an introspective mode. Yet another dead sea formed by man's folly, Fuyutsuki thought, turning his gaze back over the sea of LCL and sliding his hands into the pockets of the winter coat Sabia had salvaged for him. Memories of the disaster in the Antarctic flicked into his head and for a moment he thought of the days he had spent on a UN ship, helping rescue and recover the remnants of the Katsuragi expedition, examining the injured and the dying, determining causes of death among the deceased. He gazed across the breadth of the sea that filled what had been the GeoFront and had spilled out over the valley, watching for any signs of movement in the waters.

The authors of Genesis had written of life coming forth from the depths of the sea. Perhaps this was an artistic way of describing the primordial sea which flowed from Lilith when she first fell to earth, he thought. He drew in a long cleansing breath.

And now life has returned to that primordial sea. Who knows when and if the rest of humanity will return to their true forms and come forth from the sea? Who else will emerge and when? The radio link he had set up back at the refuge transmitted only dead air and static, no news to report, no word from other survivors who had emerged and sought to make contact with any others. Are we truly the last of the world's inhabitants from before Second Impact?

He gazed after Sabia. Considering what she is, she could outlive you, he reminded himself. And she will live on with the memory of you when you have turned to ashes. Better for her to find someone younger and more vigorous, should anyone else choose to awaken from their watery dreams.

Why then did you so readily take possession of her last night? he asked himself. Because she was there? Because she resembles Yui? Consider what one man's ambition led to, when he reached to retrieve someone who, for all intents and purposes, had passed beyond the pale. Don't let her waster her youth and innocence on you when you have used up your own on what cannot or may not be returned.

A cold breeze blew across the sea, rippling the surface. He lifted his head, focusing his gaze and attention on the sea before him. Wavelets lapped at his feet; he stepped back from the tideline. No other sound save the rush of wind in his ears and the plish-plish-plish of the waters disturbed the stillness.

Then he felt more than heard it, more a vibration than an actual sound, something just beyond physical hearing, a sound only the ears of the spirit could detect: the surussus of six billion voices speaking in somnolent whispers underwater.
