Author's Note: Another early preview of part one of ye infamous Ambitions NGE project. Set sometime between Episode 6 and 7 (after Ramiel attacks), and I figured it was high time I showed Sabia Valiant at work trying to make heads or tails of some of the EVP recordings which brought her to NERV in the first place. Pretty much a fun piece with her working/bantering with some of the techs, with some hints at things to come between her and the Vice-Commander of NERV...
Also, special thanks goes out to the folks at EvaGeeks.org, for their speculation on the gender identities of the Angels.
Sabia winced and pulled the headphones away from her ears. "Aoba, can you slow it down even more? I still can't make out what she's saying."
"I've slowed it down by sixty percent already, but I'll see what else I can do," Aoba said, glancing up from his console, then typing a few commands to adjust the playback speed.
"Ramiel was a she? I didn't think the Angels had gender," Huyuuga said, his dark eyes puzzled behind his eyeglasses. "Or at least, not any kind of gender we'd understand by anything resembling earth logic."
"I'd leave that deduction to Professor Fuyutsuki: figuring out the gender-type of things that are barely natural is more his range of expertise," Aoba said. "He's the metaphysical biologist."
"So would I, but if I had to guess, I'd say Rami was a she," Sabia said. "Unless Rami was a he with a dementedly high voice. I've heard countertenors that could sing in that range, but most of them are singing in their head voice: they're not exactly born that way." Much as she would have wanted to go into the pyschology of the Angel, she lead the subject back to the nature of the recording. "At least this time, I've got something that's clearly audible, and not that crackly racket to sift through."
"So that thing was actually saying something? It sounded like an earful of wierd singing," Huyuuga remarked.
"Well, she was sort of speak-singing so fast, I can barely make out what she's saying, which is why Aoba is slowing the playback down to clarify everything," Sabia said.
"Speaking of which, I've got it slowed down by eighty percent," Aoba said. "It's all yours."
"Thanks," Sabia said, holding the headphones to her ears again and jotting down notes on her pad.
At that moment, the door to the office opened and the Vice-Commander entered. "Excuse the intrusion, but Commander Ikari wants to know how well the transcription and translation are proceeding," he said.
"If he knew half the technical work we have to do on the audio files, he'd show a little more patience about these progress updates," Aoba muttered.
"Mm, we only just got this file tweaked enough for me to actually hear anything so that I can transcribe it," Sabia said, pausing the playback and lowering her headset.
"I told him you needed your time and space, but you probably know by now that he likes nothing more than staying right on top of any valuable information," Fuyutsuki said, with a hint of a smirk as he stepped closer to Sabia's desk and leaned over it. "Have you managed to decipher any of that unholy noise?"
"Only a little, but it's nothing of substance, and like the rest, it seems to be communicating with someone only the Angel could hear," Sabia said. "Like I've said, there appears to be some heirarchy of command, but where it's coming from, I have no way of knowing."
" 'Hey, how's it going, chief? How's the wife and kids?' " Aoba said, with deadpan sarcasm.
"That's not usually what females ask their boss," Huyuuga said, smirking.
"Female? You think this angel could be a female?" Fuyutsuki asked, turning to Sabia.
"Based on a few select observations, plus that drill-bit it employed made me think of an insect's ovipositor," Sabia said.
"I was inclined to think of it as a hermaphrodite, but that's merely my theory," Fuyutsuki replied. "We can always try to examine the remains, but an autopsy would be difficult with something that large." He turned his gaze to her pad. "I'd better not take any more of your time: we can always discuss this later at a time when it's more convenient for you.”
With that, he let himself out of the room. Sabia switched on the recording again and set to work transcribing. But she couldn’t help overhearing Huyuuga saying to Aoba, “If that was anyone else, I’d think he was setting up a date.”
“I can still hear you,” Sabia said, letting herself smirk a little.
