31_days fic: Grigori Continuum, take it from the top

Finally, something from the *beginning* of this series (I promise, I'll try to be more sequential, but the prompts tend to take me all over the chronology).

Title: "First Implications"
Day/Theme: September 1) a clumsy ersatz angel
Series: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Character/Pairing: Kozo Fuyutsuki, OFC
Rating: PG

Author's Note: I had to resist the temptation to call this one "When Kozo Met Sabia", since this is set toward the beginning of my now-infamous ambitious NGE series.

The sun shone in thick straight rays and he felt grateful to duck under the roof that covered the long rail platform, which stood largely devoid of people except for a group of schoolgirls chattering among themselves.

Something glinted in the corner of his eye; he thought he glimpsed a cluster of light divided into six wing-like shapes, but when he turned to get a look at it, he saw only a patch of light shining through a gap in the shingles overhead.

At the far end of the benches, he spotted a tall, slim woman in a short-sleeved white blouse over a knee-length black skirt sitting with her head bent over an open laptop, what appeared to be the case for it lying open next to her on the bench. The light from the gap in the roof must have somehow glinted off her long silvery-grey hair, worn loose over her slender shoulders. The collar of her blouse lay open over her graceful neck, uncovering a violet choker-style necklace from which hung a small golden charm etched with an image of an angel blowing a trumpet over a cluster of people. She looked up at him as he approached; she lifted a hand to her face and adjusted the blue-tinted sunglasses perched on the bridge of her shapely nose. Something about her face, with it's delicatly pointed chin and nose and her small mouth, reminded him of someone, but for the moment, he could not place who it was. At first he though she had violet eyes, but as she tilted down her glasses, he realized the tint of the lenses had affected the shade. Her eyes appeared to have the same deep red with a hint of brown as a glass of Merlot and they looked up at him, intent and inquiring, yet with an oddly distant and thoughtful look as if she spent more time in her head than conversing with others.

He drew in a breath, internally bracing himself. Introducing himself to women, especially younger ones always left him feeling awkward, even schoolboyishly so, even at his age. "Sabia Valiant?" he asked. "I'm Kozo Fuyutsuki, Deputy Commander of NERV."

"Oh, hello, I've been looking forward to meeting you since I got your message," she said, rising and offering her hand to him. As she did so, the hem of her skirt caught on a stack of papers in her laptop case, scattering the papers. "Oh, bother, excuse me while I pick these up. I'm usually not this clumsy."

He stooped to assist her reaching for several pages that had slid under the bench. "Nothing to worry about, we're both only human and thus we're both blundering fools at times." As he said this, his hand brushed her arm as she moved to reach for another loose page. "I'm sorry, didn't mean to intrude your personal space."

She smiled at him, looking into his face but not quite meeting his eyes. "Now it's my turn to tell you it's nothing to worry about, Mr. Fuyutsuki. I've had men do less gentlemanly things that were anything but accidental."

"I can assure you, you'll be perfectly safe with me," he said, wondering why he let that slip out.
