31_days Another fragment from "Under the Winter Moon"

I did the right thing and started rewatching the series. I don't know as if I write Gendo very well but, there again, in this segment, he's not exactly at his best (would anyone be after going through Instrumentality, then re-emerging afterwards in the sea of LCL??).

Special thanks go out to the folks at little_details for their medical know-how...

Title: "Ikarus Descended"
Day/Theme: September 2) Icarus improved
Series: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Character/Pairing: Gendo Ikari, Kozo Fuyutsuki, OFC
Rating: PG-13

Author's Note: Yes, the pun on the name of the (now former) commander of NERV was intentional. I don't think I'm the first NGE fan to make that comparison and I probably won't be the last. :: laughs:: Part of the Grigori Continuum series and takes place immediately after "Sea of Rebirth"...

Sabia let out a shout. "Kozo, come here; there's someone out there in the sea!"

Fuyutsuki snapped out of his reverie and looked toward her. She stood pointing across the wavelets at something dark bobbing just at the surface. He hurried to her side, following her pointing hand with his gaze and fixing on a dark shape half-floating several yards from the shore.

"Good heavens, it looks like Gendo," Fuyutsuki murmured and waded out after him till the sea rose nearly to his waist. He slipped an arm under the half-dead man and guided him back to the shore. With Sabia's help, he laid the man on the sand and pulled back his right sleeve. Something had lopped Gendo's right hand off, above the wrist and the stump bled though not profusely. He felt Gendo shivering and the injured man felt cool even clammy to the touch.

"He's in shock, God only knows how much blood he's lost," Fuyutsuki said. His mind dared to guess how the hand had been amputated, but he quickly, even hurriedly put that thought aside to focus on examining his patient and his injuries. He quickly removed his belt and bound it around Gendo's forearm as a rudiementary tourniquet.

"Do you think you'll need to cauterize his wound?" Sabia asked, kneeling beside them.

"If we keep it elevated till we can salvage some supplies, he should pull through. In his condition, wouldn't add a burn to his trauma," he replied. "His body is fighting the injury: the veins have started to retract into the tissues, sort of a self-cauterizing mechanism."

Gendo's eyes fluttered open behind the cracked lenses of his glasses. He stared up at them, his gaze tracking past them, unseeing. "Why...?" he asked, half a sigh, half a word.

"Gendo, relax, don't try to talk," Fuyutsuki said, half in reassurance, half as a physician's order.

"I was about to ask the same question myself, but that's probably the Grigori in me speaking," Sabia admitted.

"Whatever he's responsible for, he's still a human being and I can't in good conscience abandon him," Fuyutsuki replied.

She regarded him sideways around the lenses of her glasses. "Are you speaking as a physician or as his friend?" Sabia asked.

"I'm speaking as both, and it's arguable that I am the only true friend he ever had," Fuyutsuki replied.

She looked from Gendo's face to his. "Then he's lucky you and I were the ones to find him. Shinji will be horrified."

"Or relieved. At least this gives the two of them a chance to start over, if they don't destroy each other in the process."
