A rustle of a footstep on the sand broke his reverie. He turned to find Sabia waiting a few paces away, her face turned to the sea of rebirth. She turned her gaze away and looked him in the face.

"Penny for your thoughts?" she asked.

"I was saying goodbye to a colleague," he said.

She turned to look to the night sky. "She meant a lot to you, but I don't think she'd want you to be alone. I think, now that she's begun her eternal journey, she would want you to start your own. You'll need a travelling companion."

"'It is not good for man to be alone', so said the author of Genesis," he said, stepping close to her. "Perhaps that was why you were sent to us in the first place. I'm not a believer in fate, but if I was, I would say we were fated to find each other. Perhaps Yui, wittingly or unwittingly, had a hand in it." He reached out to take her hands in his, but she divined his thoughts and clasped his in turn. He felt the skin-prickle of her AT field for a moment, but the sensation soon dampered itself. She drew in a trembling breath and let it out slowly, the warmth forming a mist about her pale face and mingling with his own breath. He thought of an image from the poem which inspired Schoenberg's "Verklaerte Nacht", the breaths of the two lovers in the moonlight meeting and forming kisses in the air.

He leaned down and found her mouth with his, awkwardly catching the corner. She reached up and put a hand behind his head, gently guiding him

"I tasted a tear on your lips," she said. He started to hunt in his pocket for a handkerchief, but she leaned up, kissing his cheek, licking the damp track he had not sensed before.

"I have let her go, and I promise you, there won't be another to come between us, not in heart and not in spirit, either," he said.

She laughed gently. "Infidelity is the last thing we can fear at this point, since we're two of the only four people to emerge from the sea of rebirth," she said.

He glanced to the red sea below them. "Even if anyone else were to reject Instrumentality, you would still be the only one to come past the fence I put around my heart."

"And I suspect a man with your looks had more than your share of admirers in secret," Sabia said.

He managed a short terse laugh. "I heard some girlish whispers among my female students, and I overheard a few things which the female employees of NERV didn't think I could hear. But I think they knew there was no chance I would act on their words."

"Because you were spoken for, after a fashion," she said.

He glanced sideways at the violet speck in the sky. "I had my work to fill my time, and there never seemed room for another."

"No room in your schedule or no room in your heart?" she asked.

"Most likely both, now that you put it that way," he said. "But there is more than enough room now..."
