Part 2:
"How are you Toma-chan?" Aiba asked when the two doctors entered the bedroom.
Jun who was sat on his bed, blushed when his father looked at him with a teasing smile.
"Fine, I can leave the hospital, ne?!" Toma asked excitedly.
"Oh oh oh, slow down young man, we have to check your vitals before thinking about it." Aiba smiled, taking his stetoscop to check Toma's heart.
"I want to leave..." Toma pouted.
"Toma has to be fine, first." Jun took his friend's hand with a smile. "And I'll come to visit you everyday."
"I can patient more if Jun-chan visits me everyday." Toma grinned.
"Toma-kun, as much as I like you, you shouldn't flirt with my son in front of me." Sho smirked.
"Ah no... I... Gomen... I..." Toma stammered, blushing deeply.
"Well, you can invit him on a date when your health will be perfect." Sho teased.
"Papa!!" Jun screamed, his face as red as a tomato.
"What? Can't I be worried when my baby is having his first lover?"
"He isn't my first." Jun replied before gasping when his father's eyes bulged. "Ano... I mean..."
"Well, if you three have finished to talk about love problems, I would like to check my other little patients." Aiba cut Jun off.
"Sorry, Aiba-sensei!" Toma apologized.
"I'll see you tomorrow for your scanner and EGC." Aiba patted the boy's head with a soft smile. Sho's heart fluttered at how amazing Aiba was with kids. He really had to think about going further with the doctor but will Jun accept another daddy in his life?
"C'mon, Jun, didn't you want to see the checks?" Sho asked.
"I'm coming!" Aiba and Sho turned to leave but Sho didn't miss Jun kissing Toma's lips and whispering a 'See you tomorrow'.
"He is growing too quickly." Sho sighed when they reached the corridor.
"They have to. He is 17 years old, almost an adult." Aiba chuckled.
"I feel as if it was yesterday I was holding him in my arms. It will be hard to let him go."
"Papa, can we go?" Jun asked while leaving the bedroom.
"Yes, come on." Sho wrapped his arm around Jun's shoulders under Masaki's amused eyes.
****
Sho collapsed on the chair of the cafeteria with a sigh.
"When did you sleep for the last time?" Aiba asked.
"Yesterday night."
"I'm talking about a real sleep." Aiba replied, putting two coffees on the table.
"I don't even remember. And with Jun's exams, I have to stay awake late to make him work." Sho stroked his tired eyes.
"You need to sleep."
"I can't, surgeries won't be done by themselves."
"I can replace you."
"No, thank you." Sho yawned, stretching his body.
"So, tell me more about you. Why does Jun said you had saved him?"
"Jun's mother was my first love. I thought she was the good one, I loved her and planned to propose her after our graduation. We made love and like lots of horny teenagers, forgot to use protections. As it was both our first time, there were a few chances to catch an disease. After that, she started to act weirdly and one day, left me for someone else. She came back 10 months later with a three months old baby, saying it was my son and she refused to raise him."
"How did you know he was yours and not his?" Aiba asked softly.
"It was an evidence. When Jun looked at me, I saw myself in his eyes. I couldn't abandon him. I fell in love with this little life in my arms. I was ready to give up on everything for him. Jun has always had a weak health as he born premature and it was hard to take care of him while studying but as he was very mature, I managed to deal with both. Despite my work, I want to raise him, to be an important part of his life. We spend lots of time together."
"You're an amazing papa." Aiba smiled.
"I do my best."
"Do you have regrets?"
"About not using condoms this night?" Sho chuckled. "No. Not at all. Jun is everything I have, he is even more important than my job. He is all I need to be happy."
"But why does he think you saved him?"
"Jun is already lonely and I know he suffers for not having a mother. I never told him what Rika did to us. I told him she died in a car's accident as she was driving and that I managed to pull Jun out of the car before it explodes. He believed in this story and it's better this way. I don't want to make him suffer even more by telling him his own mother was ready to abandon him in the street."
"I admire you. You do so many things at the same time but always put your son on priority. Not many parents would do that."
"I just love my son." Sho smiled weakly. "And you? Don't you have children, you're a pediatrician after all."
"And 100% gay." Aiba said, making Sho laugh. "You see, even without being gay, it's hard to have children when you are pediatrician. I've saved many kids but also seen many deaths. It's so hard to see 4 years old children in a bed hospital, seeing them fighting against cancers or dying because the illness is too strong." Aiba whispered, a tear rolling down his cheek. "You never overcome a death. Never. The only thing that make you hold on is the ones you save. Adults should be like children. They are so mature, it's often them who comfort their parents when it's them who are going to die. Sometimes, I have little patients who spends all their life at hospital. I guess if I had a child, I would become paranoid, always imagining the worst. How do you do with Jun?"
"I'm always worried but I have to restrain my fears or it would spoil our lives."
"You're lucky, I wasn't able to."
"So, are you living alone?"
"No. I lived with Jun and my brother until his boyfriend asked him to marry him."
"I also have a brother but I don't really see him since he is engaged to his lover."
"Mine too. Kazu is completely invisible since Satoshi proposed him."
"Wait... Satoshi?"
"Hun. Ohno Satoshi." Aiba shrugged.
"He is my brother." I gasped.
"Really?! But your name is Sakurai..."
"Satoshi is my half brother. My mother married my father when he was one year old."
"I see."
"But you also don't have the same name and you don't look like him at all."
"Kazu was adopted when he was a baby, so, even without sharing the same blood, he is my brother. Ohchan is a great guy but they are too loud when they sleep at home." Aiba whined.
"It's not surprising, Satoshi can be wild in bed." Sho smirked.
"Yes but Kazu is a brat and knows how to get what he wants." Aiba chuckled.
"So, you have a brother. And your family..."
"They hold a Chinese restaurant in Chiba. They aren't rich but we were very happy."
"You're lucky. I grew in a rich family but I've never been very close to my father."
"That's why you try to be close to Jun?"
"Hun. I didn't want to be a stranger for him, though, my parents love Jun. They helped me to raise him at the beginning and Jun became my mom's angel. As my father is a lawyer, we don't see him a lot."
"Were you a lonely child too?"
"Yes. Like Jun, I hadn't lots of friends."
"He could spend the day with me to see how pediatricians work."
"I... It's kind of you but I don't think it's a good idea." Sho looked away with sadness.
"Why?"
"He... Jun is a very special kid. He isn't easy and it's very hard to win his trust."
"I could see with him." Aiba insisted. "Or are you the one who doesn't trust me?"
"It's not that... It's just..."
"Don't overprotect him, he is safe with me."
"He has been through very hard things in his life, I'm just trying to protect him."
"I know but trust me." Aiba put his hand on Sho's before blushing and pulling away when the doctor looked at him.
"I liked it." Sho smiled.
"Well... Eto... I have to go... I hope I'll see Jun quickly..." Aiba stammered and left under Sho's laugh.
****
"Tadaima!" Sho exclaimed while taking his shoes off.
"Okaeri papa!" Jun replied from the kitchen.
"It smells good, what have you prepared?" Sho kissed his son's cheek, looking at the preparation.
"Omuraisu. It's almost ready."
"I'm so lucky to have a good chief at home, I would hate to eat instant ramen." Sho chuckled, washing his hands as Jun was putting the plates on the tables.
"Your hands are the best for surgeries but not for cooking." Jun grinned.
"Jun, talking about surgery, Aiba proposed me to spend the day with you to allow you to see his work."
"I see." Jun bit his lip.
"You can refuse, after all, surgery is already a good thing to see."
"I... No... I want to try... I'll be fine." Jun smiled weakly.
"Are you sure? I would understand if you were too scared."
"I have to move on and forget this bad memory. I'll do my best."
"Don't hesitate to call me if you can't stand it. I'm always here for you, babe." Sho patted his son's head with a smile.
"I know. But I want you to be proud of me."
"I'm already proud of you. You're so brave and strong." Sho hugged his son tightly.
"Stop worrying for me. I'm fine, I'll be fine, it's over." Jun whispered.
"I'm sorry. I'm just scared to lose you."
"You won't lose me. Come on, you need some sleep before your damn beeper rings again."
"True." Sho laughed.
But after only three hours of sleep, Sho's beeper rang and with a sigh, the doctor left his bed to run to the hospital. When was the last time he had slept more than 3 hours? He didn't even remember. He had to take some days off before collapsing during a surgery and killing a patient.
Taking some vitamins, Sho entered the hospital, running when he saw the nurses bringing a patient in a very bad state to the emergency room.
"Details of the case!" Sho ordered.
****
"Ahhh I'm dead tired." Sho groaned, collapsing on the sofa of the rest room.
"You should sleep a bit, the beds are free." Aiba said worriedly.
"Yes... Maybe..." Sho yawned, his eyes closing. Aiba chuckled when 1 minute later, the doctor was deep asleep.
"He is so cute when he sleeps." Aiba smiled, laying a blanket on the doctor who moaned in his sleep and hugged a pillow against his chest. "You push yourself too much, Sho. Jun really needs a second papa or mama." The pediatrician whispered, imagining how it would be if he was living with them.
"Papa!" A voice exclaimed, the door slamming open.
"Tssss." Aiba pointed the doctor to Jun who put his hand on his mouth. "He just fell asleep, he is exhausted."
Jun knelt down, stroking his father's cheek with a sad look.
"It's my fault if he is exhausted."
"Eh?! No!"
"He tries to be here for me as much as possible when he has a hard work. I wish mama was still alive to take care of him." Jun whispered sadly.
"Jun..." Aiba put his hand on Jun's shoulder and the boy froze, moving back a bit with scared eyes. "Sorry."
"It's okay... Sorry..."
"Your father does all that because he loves you, don't blame yourself, he is tired but he wouldn't be happy if you weren't here. He also needs you."
"Thank you, sensei. I'll be a good doctor to take care of him later. Sleep little papa." Jun kissed his father's cheek with tenderness.
"You love your papa."
"Hun. He is the best. He has done so much for me and he is pretty cool."
"He will find a second mama for you."
"No." Jun snapped, making Aiba blink. "He has suffered enough with mama, I won't allow anyone to hurt him again. We are happy just the two of us. Nobody will take my papa." Jun said seriously and finally, Aiba saw a bit of the teenager that Jun should be. He always acted like an adult and you really wondered if he was 17 years old but his reaction right now proved he was still only a teenager.
"Nobody will steal your papa. So, do you want to see how I work?" Aiba stopped this sensitive subject.
"Yes. Thank you sensei." Jun stood up and followed the doctor.
They spent the day together, Jun looking at every gesture of Aiba who explained to him why he did all that. The young boy sometimes cried a little when they visited children who were almost dying and Aiba wondered why a child as sensitive as Jun was, could want to do such a hard work. Pediatric was the worst specialty in medicine because you had to deal with the death of children, sometimes, babies and plus, had to confront the families after. How many times parents had almost punched Aiba when the doctor announced them the death of their child? Because even if he was a very good doctor, he wasn't God and some illnesses couldn't be cured.
"Why do you want to become a pediatrician, surgery is a good specialty." Aiba asked at the end of the day.
"I want to be here for children who are alone. Papa was here when I had nobody. I'm very lucky to have him. I want to help and save children, like that, they won't be alone and will be happy with their family."
"It's a very hard work you know."
"Hun. I know I will cry a lot but you also save many lives, ne?"
"Of course." Aiba smiled.
"How... How do you react when you lose a child?"
"It's hard. Very hard. It's as if you lost your own child. Mostly if the kid was here for a long time. You feel as if the world was unfair. Children are so innocent, some of them die so young, they can't even live the amazing things you go through later. They will never date someone, will never kiss someone, will never marry or travel. They miss wonderful things and it's unfair. But I always remember that I also can save them. If doctors weren't here, they would all die."
"Have you ever cried when your patient died?"
"I always cry when I lose a child. Not in front of the family. After. I break down when I leave the hospital and I often go out to drink a bit with my friends. It helps me to think about something else and not to get depressed because I hate the thing that took them away from this earth."
"Papa is right, you're an amazing doctor." Jun smiled.
"Well, I do my best." Aiba blushed.
"I hope I'll be a pediatrician as good as you." Jun grinned.
"Thank you, Jun. Just remember one thing. This work is a work you have to do by passion. It's a work you live for. Don't think about anything else. Lots of parents force their children to be a doctor because it pays well and they will be proud to say their kid is a doctor. But it's bad to think like that. The real goal is to save as many lives as we can. To help people."
"You're right. Thank you sensei."
"Hey, honey." They turned around to see Sho walking toward them with a smile.
"Did you sleep a bit?" Aiba asked.
"30 minutes but it gave me some energy. I've told them not to count on me tonight." Sho said, wrapping his son's shoulders.
"Right decision. I'll see you tomorrow, then." Aiba smiled.
"Yes. Good night. Come on, boy, we are leaving."
"Yatta!" Jun exclaimed happily, running toward the entry.
"Thank you for taking care of him." Sho kissed Aiba's cheek, making the doctor blush deeply.
"I... No... No problem." Aiba stammered. Sho chuckled in front of so much cuteness and left without seeing Aiba's happy smile.
